Introduced in 2014, the Loewe Puzzle Bag was then-new Creative Director Jonathon Anderson’s first bag for the storied leather goods house. The Puzzle marked a new chapter for Loewe in more ways than one because it was also the first time the house had introduced a new bag shape in general.
Known for its classics (think the Amazona, Flamenco, etc.) Loewe’s handbag silhouettes are classics but modern at the same time, remaining integral to its brand DNA. The Puzzle had to be a show-stopper, yes, but it also had to have staying power.
And stay it has, remaining part of the Loewe lineup for an entire decade—a huge milestone in the luxury handbag world.
Fluidity in Fashion
Celebrated by Loewe lovers and fashion fans in the know, the Puzzle bag stood out thanks to its innovative design and origami-inspired shape. Making the puzzle bag requires immense attention to detail. It is composed of 75 pieces of leather, and it takes nearly ten hours to make a single bag.
Its shape is bold. Modern and contemporary. Masculine, but feminine.
Speaking of masculine, it was originally launched as a men’s bag, but its gender fluidity speaks to Anderson’s innovative and revolutionary design spirit. Ten years ago, most designers were designing with little crossover when it came to womenswear and menswear. That fusion has, in large part, defined Anderson’s work at Loewe.
A Puzzle for All
Aesthetic aside, the Puzzle remains a beloved favorite thanks to its functionality and craftsmanship. When it comes to size, the original has always been a go-to, thanks to its roomy interior, and over the last decade, the brand has released countless iterations of the Puzzle Bag, offering a size and shape to suit all.
Craft is at the heart of Anderson’s work at Loewe, which has remained true since his first bag design for the house was released. That exact attention to detail and precision is the final piece of the puzzle (no pun intended), allowing this new house classic to remain such a staple.
The Puzzle has been reinvented time and time again, and with each new version and collaboration, fans fall further and further in love with the Puzzle Bag.

Jonathan Anderson is truly a genius. Loewe bags have unique aesthetics unmatched by other brands.
I absolutely love my Puzzle bag. I got it about 2 years ago, and every time I wear it I love it a little more. The leather quality is so wonderful, and it’s got a casual-but-very-elevated look to it that suits so many different outfits. I would get a few more if: 1. I could afford it; and 2.there weren’t so many other cute bags out there that are on my list. But yes, it’s a classic for good reason.
I agree!!
Never understood the appeal of the puzzle bag. The changes to it didn’t help.
Agree. This bag is terribly overhyped.
I found it awkward to get in & out, just like the Jodie. I can’t understand the appeal of either.
Boring and unpractical. This bag has completely lost its appeal.
The newer versions of the puzzle are not the same quality as original puzzles. I was disappointed to find no metal feet and more plasticky leather on display at my store.
You don’t put small bags on the ground ever, so they don’t need feet.
I can give you the reason for saying that you don’t like the new Puzzle edge and it can be less elaborate than the classic. But to say that the skin has changed is totally wrong, it is more they have taken out the satin skin that is of extreme quality. And with respect to the metal feet. It’s been 7 years since they removed them from the small and mini models so that the bag doesn’t weigh so much, in the normal and large models they continue to wear them.
Jonathan Anderson is a wonderful artist and he created 10 years ago a new model that does not go unnoticed you will like it or hate it but above all it is original. I have a fanny pack and I like it more every day.
I had to return mine because the quality was terrible.
Was it real??
Yes. Bought from the Madrid store. Super disappointed but I think the brand is vastly overhyped.
I hope they offered you a change, because it can always happen that a bag passes all the quality controls it has. In my case I have a Puzzle and its quality is exceptional both in the leather and in the finishes.
Like Chanel and Louis Vuitton!!
