Your first designer bag is always going to feel like a big deal—whether you want it to or not. No matter your age or how much money you’re willing (and able) to spend, buying your first designer handbag can be daunting. And when it comes to designer bags, a “first bag” means different things to different people, not to mention vastly different budgets.
Once upon a time, first-time handbag buyers could save up a chunk of change in the low four figures and have a wide range of entry-level options to choose from. While that’s no longer the case, there are still brands doing it right—offering starter bags at (fairly) accessible price points without making them feel like a consolation prize. Brands whose “starter bags” aren’t just pouches… I’m looking at you.
Gucci is one of those brands, and with Demna at its helm, the bitchy little shoulder bag—yeah, I said it—that ruled the ’90s is so back. Reminiscent of Tom Ford-era Gucci, the brand’s stacked lineup feels like the perfect place to start, and if I were buying my first designer bag in 2026, I’d be running, not walking, to Gucci.
Gucci Gossip Shoulder Bag
Everything from the name to the bag’s versatile chain and leather straps feels intentionally geared towards the next generation of handbag lovers. Classic GG monogram will always be a good choice, but the brown feels especially modern and fresh.
Gucci Jackie Shoulder Bag
For the newbie who loves classic with a twist and a bit more understated bag, the Gucci Jackie small shoulder bag is perfect. While many brands’ entry-level bags are made of fabric, this one is completely leather, which is an added bonus. You can never go wrong with black, but the pink is a fun option if you prefer simple with a twist!
Gucci Lunetta Bag
The simplicity of the Lunetta bag is made up for by its functionality, and for a mini bag, it feels refreshingly practical. Feeling both nostalgic and modern at once, its ease of wear and slim under-the-arm silhouette pull me back to where it all began for many of us, making this a bag I’d recommend time and time again as a first.
Gucci Lady Lunetta Bag
A more stylized, elevated take on the small Lunetta crossbody bag, this is what I mean when I say Demna has nailed the bitchy little shoulder bag! This would look so chic over the shoulder or tucked under the arm like a pouch—a very 2026 version of a ’90s icon!
Gucci Madison Bag
Speaking of the ’90s, the Gucci Madison bag with its small metal logo and black denim print feels plucked from the archives in the best way possible. As just under $2,000, its size will give you the most bang for your buck!

Personally, I wouldn’t get another go for something a bit larger. Gucci has larger, more functional bags than this. I would save a bit more and get one of those.
I think Gucci bags at all price points are well made and great options for a first designer bag.
Hello no, I would stick to my first designer bag: LV speedy 25 bandoulier which is USD 1900 and will be a classic that I can wear for decades without feeling like I’m out of style
these bags look cheap and non functional
