When Alessandro Michele was appointed creative director at Gucci in 2015, fashion fans and Gucci lovers alike eagerly awaited what the House would look like under his creative direction. They got their first glimpse with Michele’s Fall 2015 collection, presented just two months into his tenure at Gucci.
The collection would reinvent Gucci forever, blending ’70s glamour with casual luxury. As for the bags, one of the most important designs of modern Gucci debuted that season: the Gucci Dionysus. Second only to the Marmont, the Gucci Dionysus became one of Michele’s biggest bag successes during his time at the House.
The Birth of the Gucci Dionysus
Instantly recognizable by its distinct, structured shape and tiger-head closure, the Gucci Dionysus is a play on Gucci’s heritage, revisited and renewed. The bag is defined by its standout tiger-head spur closure, an ode to the House’s archives. The detail references the Greek god Dionysus, who, in myth, is said to have crossed the River Tigris on a tiger sent to him by Zeus.

The first collection included several variations of the Dionysus, most notably those crafted in GG Supreme canvas with a suede interior flap. Novelty iterations were also an instant hit, from Gucci’s GG Blooms print to the House’s iconic bee motif. It was the height of the fashion influencer era, and it was nearly impossible to report on late-2010s Fashion Week street style without spotting a Dionysus—or two or three—among the crowd.
The Dionysus Enters a New Era
What worked so well about the Dionysus was the way it expertly married Gucci’s archival codes with modernity, and what resonated then still feels relevant a decade later under Demna’s direction. In fact, that melding of Gucci’s different eras has come to define Demna’s early collections. Generation Gucci is just that: a study of the archives that celebrates the House’s past, present, and future.

Within that study, the Gucci Dionysus has been given new life with refreshed, modern details like a lighter weight, a longer chain strap, and contrasting hardware. The iconic, jewelry-inspired tiger-head closure has even been reimagined across smaller bags and small leather goods. Everything that made the Dionysus so defining a decade ago feels just as relevant in this new chapter for Gucci. This is the era of Gucci we’ve all been waiting for.
