One of Gucci’s most iconic brand signifiers is its bamboo handles, which date all the way back to the 1940s. It is fitting that for its celebration of 60 years in Japan, Gucci is choosing to highlight one of its most beloved House staples with a new exhibition honoring Gucci Bamboo.
Running now through September 23rd at the Gucci Ginza Gallery in Tokyo, Bamboo 1947: Then and Now celebrates 60 years of Gucci in Japan. The exhibition blends the historical origins of bamboo with contemporary takes on the classics, offering a unique perspective on the iconic Bamboo 1947.
Classic Craft Meets Contemporary Style
True to its name, Gucci Bamboo was introduced in 1947 and quickly became synonymous with Gucci’s impeccable quality and craft. Created by Guccio Gucci, at the time the design was revolutionary. All these years later through changing times and creative directors, it remains a staple for the house.
Gucci Bamboo is one of those rare bags that feels contemporary yet classic. Reinvented season after season, it bridges the gap between Gucci’s past and its present. The exhibition, which spans two floors features an expansive look at Gucci Bamboo over the years.
From archival pieces that date back to 1959 all the way up to present-day designs from Sabato De Sarno, the selection is a true testament to the importance of Gucci Bamboo in modern handbag history.
To expand on the selection, the 7th floor is dedicated to a special collection of 60 vintage Bamboo 1947 bags reimagined by a select group of Japanese artists. Each bag has been uniquely transformed into a true work of art, melding the worlds of art, fashion, and history.

I bought this bag last year in the brightest of orange. This is my favorite bag, most complimented bag, and it actually holds a lot. I can fit my phone, wallet, key fob, lip gloss and more. Also comes with a mirror. Just a classic I hold dear to my heart.
