The 25 Best Bags of New York Fashion Week Spring 2017

Fashion critics sometimes crow about how we now live in a post-trend world, but I’m not sure that’s entirely correct when it comes to handbags. While it’s true that the market now provides more variety than ever, it’s still possible to find clear commonalities in a seasonal round of accessories, and that was absolutely true of the bags that came down the runway at New York Fashion Week Spring 2017 last week.

First and foremost, saddle bags aren’t going anywhere, and that’s probably a good thing. The shape is simple and functional, and it looks good in a variety of sizes and holds more than you’d think. Also notable were the number of printed and patterned bags that graced the season’s New York runways; consumers have lately seemed to want something a little more interesting and personal than a plain, solid color on a bag, and it looks like the city’s designers intend to give it to them.

New York tends not to lead when it comes to bag trends, though, so we’re still anticipating the real fireworks in Milan and Paris in the coming weeks. In the meantime, check out over two dozen of Spring 2017’s best bags below.

Question: why is everyone carrying purses with straps in their hand? Is that a new thing? or just for fashion shows?

Fashion shows like to show this, but truth be told how often will you ever do that other than when you’re frazzled and the bag is falling off your shoulder… 😉

It would appear that Marc Jacobs is trying for the avant-garde vibe that Allesandro Michele is doing at Gucci but it just not working! Allesandro has this amazing ability to take whimsical design and turn them into something fresh and luxurious, apparently not so easy to copy.

Also a knock-off Karl Lagerfeld/Chanel: the strap is 100% copied from Chanel and the cat theme, especially this year alone, entirely Lagerfeld “personally”.

Jason Wu’s bags were nice. I feel like Kate Spade really upped her game for spring! Tory Burch has beautiful bags too. Um, Thomas Maier’s bucket bag looks exactly like Jill Milan’s bucket bag from a few years ago. . . Hmmmm I loved Monique Lhuillers’ spring runway bags too.

Love the MK clutch, and it’s my favorite. Not a fan of the Alice&Olivia. It looks like a mall kiosk bag.

I love the deep copper color on the Tomas Maier bag. That’s not a metallic I’ve seen in a bag before.

Seriously people! Imperfections are OK-even on models (lanugo hair, mangled feet, hooves!!!) Live and let live.

What’s up with the Maiyet photo? The model’s feet look mangled.
