Every brand has its signature symbols and motifs, and when you think of a Miu Miu bag, one thing immediately comes to mind—matelassé.
Matelassé, defined by a specific stitching technique that results in a quilted, padded finish, is not unique to Miu Miu. Still, few brands have mastered the matelassé finish on leather bags quite the way Miu Miu has. So much so that, over 30 years after the brand was founded, the technique has become synonymous with the house of Miu Miu.
The Original Miu Miu Obsession
Yet it wasn’t until 2006 that Miu Miu introduced matelassé leather into its lineup, first presenting it on the runway for the Fall 2006 season. Twenty years later, the intricate technique—which requires exceptional attention to detail and craftsmanship—remains an integral part of Miu Miu’s DNA.
Today, we’re paying homage to the bag that started it all in celebration of twenty years of iconic Miu Miu matelassé: the Coffer bag.
The Miu Miu Coffer bag is the epitome of a 2000s icon. Its smooshy, soft, relaxed body features a chunky braided leather handle that sits comfortably over the shoulder, lending it that effortlessly cool, the-paparazzi-are-following-me appeal.
An Icon Revisited
And the paparazzi were following the era’s It-girl companions, as the bag was spotted on Y2K darlings like Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Alba, Keira Knightley, and more. Adding to its appeal were the Coffer’s many utilitarian pockets, perfect for the seemingly endless supply of essentials we all felt the need to tote around in the aughts.
The Coffer bag is arguably one of the most popular Miu Miu matelassé bags of all time—it even saw a revival in the late 2010s before eventually being discontinued. Still, the Coffer remains as relevant as ever thanks to its relaxed silhouette and classic matelassé pattern, paving the way for the Miu Miu matelassé icons of today, like the Wander and Arcadie.

Always hated this bag.
Love this bag!
I always loved this bag and still have mine from 2006 and 2010. I think this might be the perfect time to pull one of them from the back of the bag closet and take her for a spin. ❤️
These images reminded me how many of us really liked wearing bags hanging so low on the side back then. I looked at some of my pictures in early 2000’s and couldn’t understand why I did that… haha. It’s endearing for a certain age I guess. I smiled at my younger self.
Mine is in smooshy Chocolate brown leather. Believe I bought it in 2007 on Net-a-Porter. My first really expensive designer bag. Pulled it out of hiding this winter and it still looks like new. I get comments on the bag whenever I wear it.
Must admit there are better and more practical bags out there today. But the craftmanship and the feel is exceptional.
I had one in purple – absolutely loved that bag and had to get it sent from the US to Australia.
