In today’s ever-changing world of luxury fashion, few creative directors are as long-standing as Miuccia Prada at Prada. Mrs. Prada remains the queen of luxury fashion, continuing to explore modern ideals of femininity and all that it means to be a woman in today’s world.
While Prada has seen many iterations and changes over the years, its core aesthetic and distinct brand DNA remain under Mrs. Prada’s watchful eye—it was, and always will be, a powerhouse Italian label that women want to wear.
A Collection Made for the Moment
For Fall 2016, Prada introduced a collection fit for the times—a maximalist’s dream full of bold textures, intricate layering, mixed patterns, and prints. As for the bags, there were many, including two major new Prada styles: the Pionnière and the Cahier. The former was an on-trend saddle bag, worn crossbody, of course, and finished with Prada’s logo in gold-tone metal.
The latter turned out to be a massive hit for Prada. It was the height of the Instagram influencer era, and the It bag on the arm of every influencer—or wannabe influencer—was the Prada Cahier. Both influenced by and named after the French word for “notebook,” the sleek, semi-structured silhouette of the Cahier mimicked the shape of an antique diary, quickly working its way into bag lovers’ hearts.
The Rise of the Prada Cahier
The Pionnière offered a simpler take on the era’s color-blocking trend, while the Cahier was flashier, featuring gold hardware at the corners and bolder color combinations. The crossbody iteration that became incredibly popular sat alongside a structured top-handle version and an embellished pouch, all featuring the same journal-inspired hardware.
For the boho bags of the era, there was the edgy, modern Prada Corsaire Bag, an innovative saddle bag with removable gold rings. The Prada Corsaire arrived in quilted nylon, smooth leather, and classic Prada Saffiano. It was the era of more-is-more, and it’s one we look back on fondly.
The Cahier would go on to see massive commercial success, arriving in new colors and bold novelty iterations alike, while the classic Prada Paradigme Bag, also shown on the runway that year, offered a fresh take on the classic Prada power bag.
Below, we’re taking a look back at the bags that ruled the runway—and mid-2010s fashion! Do you remember?
