The Most Talked About Bags of 2020

Some new, some old, these bags stirred up a lot of talk this year

2020 has been a quite a crazy year and it’s hard to believe that we’re now in the final countdown. As we settle into the last month of the year we thought it would be fun to look back on some of the most discussed bags of the past 11 months. While it’s undeniable that this has been a year unlike any other, one thing that hasn’t changed is this bag-loving community. We all may have taken a step back in various ways, whether that means pairing down our collections, falling back in love with what we already own, or saving and budgeting extra hard to acquire our newest carry, we can all still appreciate the joy and community that loving bags brings. This year the focus on trend-driven bags continued along with the propensity towards the age old philosophy of what’s old is new. Take a look below at the bags that remained highly discussed this year both in our little corner of the internet and beyond. From social media callouts and celeb spottings to pages on pages of forum discussions, these bags have been an integral part of 2020.

Bottega Veneta The Pouch

Bottega Veneta’s The Pouch was introduced to us last year, but in 2020 it continued to reign supreme in the bag world, garnering attention from celebs and influencers to everyday bag lovers and even the skeptics among us. Way more functional than one might think and equally as stylish, the Pouch continues to be both relevant and lusted for, remaining one of the fashion world’s most coveted It-Bags. This year Bottega Veneta reinvented this highly coveted design by adding a chunky chain shoulder strap to this typically strap-less design. Bottega Veneta’s quality has always been spot on and this design oozes that traditional Italian craftsmanship. The Pouch is arguably responsible for the current clutch movement and has inspired many other designs of its kind from both other luxury brands and contemporary designers alike.

The Telfar Shopping Bag

Over the past three years, the popularity of the Telfar Shopping Bag has grown exponentially, and this year the hype continued as BIPOC-owned brands received the attention they deserve. The bag continues to be highly talked about and lusted after, and the future is bright for Telfar Clemens, the brains behind the aptly-named Bushwick Birkin, who this year took home the CFDA American Accessories Designer of the Year award. Being so hyped (and highly sought after) that you can’t keep bags in stock is a problem that most designers would love to have and this year proved that fans still just can’t get enough of this ultra-affordable, yet uber-stylish shopping tote. With its new Ugg collaboration in the works the chatter is sure to last well into 2021.

Chanel 19 Bag

Though the Chanel 19 gets its name from the year it was released, the bag rose to popularity this year, becoming a staple both within Chanel’s assortment as well as within the closets of fashion folk around the globe. Modeled after the brand’s original 2.55 bag, the 19 is softer and less structured featuring a bold chunky chain that resonates well in 2020. Chanel has released countless new iterations of the 19 this year–from denim and tweed to sequins and velvet proving that the 19 is here to stay.

Prada Re-Edition 2000

A favorite of stars who were just babies when the original first hit the bag scene, the Prada Re-Edition 2000 was reintroduced late last year as well. The perfect mini bag, the bag popped up at a time when vintage-inspired and archival revival bags were at its peak. In easy to care for nylon that now seems more sought-after than ever before, there was no stopping the popularity of the Prada Re-Edition 2000 this year, which works so well in 2020 thanks to its baguette like shape and tiny shoulder strap that easily sits under the arm.

Gucci Jackie 1961

Speaking of archival revivals, this year Gucci re-issued its iconic Jackie 1961 bag. Originally created in 1961 and named after Jackie Kennedy herself, the bag was one of the most anticipated releases of the year. Its signature curved lines and hardware defines the silhouette and somehow it feels both modern and classic at the same time. Already a favorite of celeb set, the Jackie is available in an array of different iterations for both men and women.

Dior Book Tote

The Dior Book Tote was released over two years ago, yet it remains to be one of the most sought after shapes in the designer bag world. The original size (and the line’s largest) was designed to carry all of one’s daily essentials from work to play and beyond. With the success of the original, Dior then added two additional sizes to the lineup: small and mini, further catapulting this open-tote carryall to It-Bag status. With new iterations introduced season after season, the Dior Book Tote remains to be one of the most-discussed designs of the year.

Louis Vuitton Onthego Escale

The Louis Vuitton Escale collection was released during one of the most tumultuous years in history, yet even still the introduction of this colorful line of bags was welcomed with open arms. Fans simply could not get enough of the monogram tie-dye like effect, adorning bags, RTW and accessories. One of the most beloved shapes of the last few years, the Onthego Escale became the favorite of this collection, selling out almost immediately only to pop up on resale sites at well beyond retail.
