Saint Laurent Forays Into Nylon With Its Latest Version of the Le 5 à 7

A fan-favorite given a casual twist. Love It or Leave It?

The epic return of the nylon designer bag shows no signs of slowing down. Back in late 2018, we began to notice a major uptick in offerings within the nylon designer bag sphere. Then, 2020 came, and with it, a global pandemic, furthering the need for a casual, easy-to-clean, stylish bag. It was the perfect storm of sorts for a trend that was already on its way back to the top. Now, four years after we first noticed the trend returning, nylon has moved well beyond a trendy option for stylish handbag lovers and has become a full-on closet staple.

When done right, nylon bags can be just as stylish and sleek as their leather counterparts. While some brands, like Prada, are known for their nylon just as much as their other offerings, others, like Louis Vuitton for example, have taken this craze as an opportunity to try their hand at something new.

Saint Laurent is the latest brand to foray into the stylish, functional world of nylon. While the House has offered nylon in the past, the functional material has never been a major part of its lineup. It is typically offered in more sporty silhouettes like belt bags or backpacks. This time they’ve remade its ever-popular Le 5 à 7 shoulder bag in trendy nylon.

A Fan Favorite, Reimagined

Crafted from econyl®, recycled nylon, the latest addition to the Le 5 à 7 family features the same sleek shape but with a longer shoulder strap. The bag is also lined in nylon, with one interior pocket, and features the distinct YSL Cassandre hook closure. Coming this spring and available for pre-order now, the Saint Laurent Nylon Le 5 à 7 is offered in solid black or black/white contrast as well in various color options with a retail price of $2,400.

While I love (and own) the original version, I find the nylon version too much of a juxtaposition between dressy and casual. Personally, I’ll leave it.

What do you think? Love It or Leave It?

That doesn’t look like a $2400 bag. Looks more like a gift with purchase after buying a full-size bottle of Black Opium.

Agreed

Margot

Hard to believe anyone would pay $2400 for this bag.

VivianfromLA

Yikes. The worst of both worlds: cheap with giant logo.

Sara

I’m not a fan of how the nylon puckers. And it doesn’t look like $2400 bag. At all.

Fabuleux

Looks extremely cheap.

VSQR

This bag looks like a free bag with purchase of fragrance at department stores

How is this tacky thing the same price as the leather version? I hope this doesn’t mean another price hike is coming.

Erin

I love and own the original leather version, not a fan of the nylon though.

I was thinking about the leather version but I didn’t like how there is no full closure or how the leather wrinkles. I usually reserve my opinion on new bags but I am so disappointed in this. Trying to be Prada and give me more wrinkles I can’t.

Natalie

Just No!!

HRCM

While the price is a huge NO I do love it, it’s giving me what years of Prada re-editions have not been able to give me

Lisa

From bad to worse….what is going on with these designers?? Big Fat NO from me.

Becky

I kind of like it, it’s just a bit off, in the ways others here have previously suggested.
I like the idea of non-leather (and non-imitation leather) bags, so I appreciate the effort?

I did look more into this econyl® material. And while it’s more eco-friendly than traditional nylon, it’s not entirely neutral for the environment. Micro-plastics being the biggest issue.

I saw this bag in the store in Paris, where it was about 1800 euro I think, and even at that price I was surprised. This seemed like a great opportunity for them to introduce a bag around the 1500 mark. The bag itself is really fun with beautiful colors, I was instantly drawn to it – it’s hard to wear crossbody, as the strap is a bit short, that was a little bit disappointment because I would expect more versatility from a more casual bag like this. Conclusion: needs revision but an exciting new beginning for them
