I’ve been writing about bags for a decade, and with that experience, I’ve seen a lot of bags come, go, and stay. I can confidently say that about 95% of hardware on handbags—at all price points—typically comes in some shade of silver- or gold-toned metal, with the occasional matte finish thrown in.
While the handbag world is as vast as ever, and you can find nearly every color and leather combination in every silhouette imaginable, it’s rare for hardware to feel truly exciting or different. While Hermès is known for its enamel hardware, it remains a largely underrated finish. So when I saw Michael Rider’s new take on the Celine Triomphe bag, I was immediately intrigued.
The Triomphe’s Rise to House Icon
The iconic Celine Triomphe logo, revived by Hedi Slimane when he took over the helm at Celine, is one of the brand’s most important motifs. After lying dormant in the archives for decades, the Triomphe returned better than ever, making its debut on the classic Triomphe bag in Spring 2019.
Rooted in Parisian history, the logo—featuring double links that form two Cs—is inspired by the Arc de Triomphe and dates back to Celine’s early days. The bold emblem was introduced as the finishing touch on a classic Celine silhouette: the box bag.
A Fresh Take on a Celine Classic
The Celine Triomphe quickly became a new House icon and has remained an integral part of the Celine family, proving its staying power. Now, with Michael Rider at the helm, the classic bag receives an exciting refresh with the addition of enamel hardware, further emphasizing the Triomphe closure.
For Celine Automne 2026, the Celine Teen Triomphe arrives in three colors—black, syrah, and white—each featuring enamel finishes. My favorite is the black-and-cobalt colorway. Though the change is subtle, the enamel adds a cool, playful finish to a bag that has remained, and will continue to remain, a brand classic.
