The Saint Laurent Icare Maxi Shopping tote burst onto the scene when Zoë Kravitz was spotted with it in the spring of 2022. Big bags were back in a BIG way. Later worn by Hailey Bieber, we covered the bag that summer. It quickly made the rounds on social media and became one of the most talked-about bags of the year.
The Icare Maxi struck a chord among many fatigued by the micro-bag movement, eliciting a fair amount of nostalgia for the days when the bigger the bag, the better. Arriving solely in black, the Icare was an instant hit, quickly selling out and reselling on the secondary market for even more than its (already hefty) retail price.
The Saint Laurent Icare Gets a Sleek New Update
When a brand releases a new bag that consumers quickly adopt, it typically capitalizes on that popularity by expanding the line and offering new colors, sizes, or shapes. The Icare eventually debuted in new colors and sizes, plus quilted suede, raffia, and more.
Now, as we continue to see nostalgia for the era of the big bag, particularly those with an ever-present hint of cool-girl slouch, Saint Laurent has debuted a brand-new version of the Icare Maxi, and it immediately caught our eye.
While the original version speaks to the maximalist in all of us with its quilted leather and oversized iteration of the brand’s iconic YSL Cassandre logo, this new version will appeal to those who prefer things a bit more understated.
Understated Luxury
Debuting in a beautiful brown hue dubbed Barley, the newest addition to the Icare line is crafted from smooth calfskin leather, offering just the right amount of slouch. Its interior is lined in suede and fitted with a gold-tone chain that can be looped through rivets on the sides of the bag, allowing them to cinch and change shape.
The finishing touch is the bag’s statement maxi YSL Cassandre logo, its monochromatic leather inlays offering a more understated appeal than the original design.

Definitely better than the tacky gold logo.
