As much as we’d like to walk into a luxury boutique whenever we want to shop, that’s not the reality for most of us. And while we talk a lot about bags here— which brands we love, which new styles we’re lusting after, and which labels are dominating the handbag game right now— we don’t always give the contemporary market the attention it deserves.
The handbag market is dominated by major designer brands, with a handful of luxury conglomerates holding much of the industry’s power. However, more affordable handbag brands have grown exponentially over the last decade and a half, with many falling under the contemporary or mid-range luxury umbrella. As much as we’d like to avoid stating the obvious, it’s not completely necessary to spend thousands of dollars to get a great bag.
With the ever-rising prices of luxury designer bags, there’s no better time to give some love to our tried-and-true mid-range favorites. Below, we’re unpacking the five best contemporary handbag brands to shop in 2026. Let’s take a look!
Strathberry
Launched in 2013, Strathberry is an Edinburgh-based brand known for its simple, clean aesthetic and unique hardware. Though the brand first launched in 2013, it gained notoriety in 2018 after Meghan Markle was spotted wearing a bag from the brand.
Designed in Scotland and handcrafted in Spain, Strathberry’s bags offer a sense of ease and wearability while still feeling special and of the moment. Its bags are defined by clean, elegant lines and the brand’s signature—its music bar hardware. The designs still fall somewhat under the radar, offering the perfect hint of quiet luxury at a price point that’s still accessible.
DeMellier
Launched in 2010, London-based brand DeMellier was founded with sustainability at the forefront of its ethos. Its silhouettes mix heritage ideals with modern flair, bridging the gap between luxury and contemporary. Crafted ethically in Europe with sustainably sourced materials, DeMellier’s bags are produced in limited quantities and feature signature details that lend an “if you know, you know” appeal.
Manu Atelier
Founded by two sisters who share a love of handbags, Manu Atelier launched in 2014 and quickly became a cult-favorite handbag brand for those in the know. We first covered the brand in 2018, and in the past decade, it has seen incredible growth and evolution.
Consistently recommended thanks to its cool factor, stylish appeal, and sharp price point, Manu Atelier remains a go-to for fashion fans from New York to Paris and beyond. Its ever-popular Le Cambon is offered in a range of sizes, leathers, and colors, making it a favorite season after season.
Coach
Needing no introduction, Coach has ruled the contemporary market for generations. Founded in 1941, the brand began as a family-owned leather goods business before evolving into the large corporation we know today.
While the brand made its name producing quality leather bags that are easy to wear yet stylish, over the years it has seen many changes. Still, in 2026, there’s no better time to be a Coach fan. Under the design direction of creative director Stuart Vevers since 2013, Coach has had a bag-led glow-up, with icons like the Brooklyn and Empire continuing to rule the street style scene.
Polène
Since its inception in 2016, exceptional craftsmanship and creativity have been at the forefront of Polène. Its bags are not only incredibly chic and sleek but also boast unmatched quality at a price point well under $1,000—a nearly impossible balance to strike.
Polène began with the launch of one core silhouette, quickly expanding on its know-how and introducing new shapes to satisfy the wants of its ever-growing list of brand loyalists. The Parisian brand remains known for its sleek, logo- and hardware-free designs, letting its leathercraft do the talking.
Defined by unique shapes and architectural lines, Polène continues to be one of the handbag world’s most-wanted mid-range brands—and for good reason.

I think Longchamp should be on this list!
Absolutely! High quality, versatility, incredible value from a heritage French brand
it should, but no affiliate links means no coverage
That is false. Two of the brands included in this list are not current affiliate partners.
I would add Lindquist to this list. Wonderful leather and craftsmanship, made in Rhode Island.
Radley London is my vote
Radley went bankrupt on May 28th
