How Can Brands Make Online Shopping Seamless?

Let's talk.

Consumer shopping habits continue to evolve rapidly—and e-commerce is now at the center of it all.

U.S. online retail spending is projected to reach a record $1.53 trillion in 2026, driven by the lasting shift toward digital-first shopping that accelerated during the pandemic. What began as a necessity has become a default behavior, reshaping not only where people shop but what they feel comfortable buying online.

One of the biggest shifts? High-consideration purchases moving online—items that consumers once almost always wanted to see in person before committing.

Would You Buy a Handbag Without Seeing it in Person?

Luxury and handbag shopping has traditionally been a “feel it first” experience. Texture, weight, structure—these details used to require an in-store visit. But that expectation is changing fast.

Between the growth of resale platforms and the expansion of luxury brands online, many shoppers now regularly purchase bags they’ve never physically seen. What was once unthinkable is becoming increasingly normal.

And yet, the hesitation hasn’t disappeared completely.

Even today, plenty of shoppers still prefer to see or handle a bag before buying. The difference now is that digital convenience often outweighs that preference—especially when demand is high, inventory is limited, or resale deals move quickly.

Personally, this shift has changed how I shop too. I used to never consider buying a bag without seeing it in person. Now? I’ve done it more times than I can count—both new and pre-loved.

Is price a factor in what you purchase online versus in-store?

It really comes down to priorities. If you’re shopping primarily for look and style rather than tactile experience and long-term wear considerations, online buying becomes much more realistic. For everyone else, the decision is still more nuanced—and that puts pressure on brands to improve the online experience.

What Brands Need to Get Right

Better imagery, more accurate color representation, detailed product videos, real customer reviews, and even virtual try-ons are no longer “nice to have.” They’re becoming essential.

So I’m curious:

Do you buy handbags online without seeing them in person first? And what would make you feel more confident doing it?

I rarely buy bags online if they’re not shown on a model . It’s hard to tell how a bag fits in the hand or shoulder, etc. I also never shop unless they offer free returns.

Yes, I have purchased bags online. There are certain bags that I have enough research information that I feel confident in making the purchase online. I live in an area where there is limited designer boutiques, I do purchase when on vacation most of the time.

That makes sense. Not everyone can easily visit a retail store.

I do, if I am assured of a seamless return, or if I have seen enough video reviews of the bag that I am in no doubt it would suit.

I don’t think luxury houses will ever integrate unbiased customer reviews on their website. I can’t imagine Hermès allowing someone to write and publish on their website “this bag is cumbersome, impractical to open and close, and way overpriced.” Same with other top-tier brands.

There are many bags I’ve bought online, sight unseen, including one of my most favorite, the YSL sac du jour. However, there are also many bags that look underwhelming in photos, but the tactile experience really sells it, like my Celine soft 16. I don’t think I would have purchased it from the pictures, but the gorgeous color and buttery soft leather sold me on it!
