Bulgari Appoints Mary Katrantzou As First-Ever Leather Goods and Accessories-Focused Creative Director

A new chapter for the storied luxury brand begins...

Founded in Rome by a Greek silversmith in 1884, Bulgari’s rich history lies in its renowned Italian craft and exquisite attention to detail. Known first for its intricate jewelry, the Bulgari family has defined a distinct style and reputation over its 140 years in business.

Now, the brand embarks on a new chapter with the appointment of its first-ever accessories and leather goods creative director, Mary Katrantzou, Vogue reported today.

A New Chapter

A natural fit, Mary Katrantzou has collaborated with Bulgari since 2019, when the brand loaned jewelry pieces for one of her fashion shows. Then, in 2021, Katrantzou and Bulgari furthered their partnership when she explored the house’s Serpenti motif, one of the brand’s most important emblems.

The Serpenti is a symbol of wisdom, indicative of rebirth and vitality, and Katrantzou’s capsule is centered around it. Featuring small evening minaudières and leather bags, Katrantzou melded her world with Bulgari’s telling a beautiful story of craftsmanship through style.

Katrantzou was born in Greece like Bulgari’s founder, and upon graduating from Central Saint Martins, a breeding ground for fashion greats, the designer quickly made a name for herself, specializing in the then-new medium of digital placement printing.

From London to Rome

Katrantzou’s work at Bulgari will extend from leather day bags to evening bags, exquisite high-jewelry bags, and the rare one-of-a-kind pieces that set the brand apart. The designer will continue to run her London-based brand, traveling to and from Bulgari’s design HQ in Florence and Roman offices.

The designer told Vogue, “It’s a new chapter, and being around a completely different culture than my own company has been so inspiring. The speed with which an idea can be realized and a prototype can be made is extremely rewarding for any creative.” She further cemented her excitement, stating, “There’s just so much potential here.”

Mary Katrantzou’s first pieces for Bulgari will drop later this year, hitting stores sometime in August.
