Right Now, You Can Buy an Hermès Cardboard Box with Unknown Contents for $11,500

If I told you that Hermès is offering an $11,500 one-of-a-kind piece that even hardcore Birkin addicts are having trouble justifying, would you believe me? $11,500 is barely more expensive than a baseline leather Birkin, after all–it’s a number that frequent Hermès shoppers wouldn’t be shocked by. Difficult to believe, right? Especially from a brand whose customers are known for their appreciation of exclusivity. What if I told you that the prospective buyer wouldn’t be told what they’re purchasing before it landed in their hot little hands? Suddenly, it all makes sense.

Hermès has been running a program called Petit h Surprise since mid-2015, in which customers order monthly mystery boxes from its website with no clue what’s inside them. In the past, the boxes have included things like leather charms and small scarves from the brand’s Petite h line, which uses material scraps from the manufacture of the brand’s other accessories to make whimsical, relatively inexpensive trinkets. Usually, the boxes sell out relatively quickly, and thankfully for the curious among us, they’re fully refundable if you don’t like what you got.

The mid-March boxes include two one-of-a-kind releases, though, along with a less expensive box that Hermès made available like normal. The least expensive box sold out, but the two one-of-a-kind options, at $4,525 and $11,500, respectively, are still available. On our PurseForum, Hermès fans have jokingly put out a call for a kind soul with a high credit limit to order one of them and let the group know what it is. As of now, that request has not been fulfilled–both boxes are still available on the brand’s website.

It’s difficult to speculate what either option might be–Hermès has a vast product line, and much of its wares are extremely expensive. Both product descriptions indicate the contents of the boxes are appropriate for both women and men, so it’s somewhat unlikely that either is a bag, even though both prices would be appropriate for one of the brand’s purses.

If you have a nagging curiosity and the aforementioned high credit limit, you can pick up either or both of the one-of-a-kind boxes via Hermès.
