Few symbols are as integral to Gucci’s brand DNA as the storied Gucci Horsebit. The distinct motif has been synonymous with the House of Gucci for over 70 years, used throughout Gucci’s history on bags, shoes, accessories, and more.
This year, the Horsebit 1955 Shoulder Bag, one of the most widely recognized bags bearing the Horsebit, celebrates its 70th anniversary, making it the perfect time to breathe new life into one of the most iconic brand signifiers.

A New Chapter: The Gucci Half Horsebit
The half-Horsebit motif first saw a resurgence on the runway for Spring 2025, and was further expanded upon for Pre-Fall 2025 with the debut of the beloved Gucci Softbit. The half-Horsebit, which was integral to 2000s Gucci, is an oversized, edgy take on the classic equestrian-rooted emblem—one that has helped to define Gucci’s DNA.

As for the half-Horsebit motif? It is helping to rewrite Gucci’s codes as the House enters its next chapter. This season, a slouchy, effortlessly cool new shoulder bag joins the half-Horsebit family, and we took her out for a walk through Paris to see if she’s as cool as she seems, spoiler alert—I am obsessed!
When the bold, gold maxi Horsebit detail first saw a revival for Spring, I was immediately intrigued. While I love a good brand classic as much as any handbag lover, I also tend to dress a bit bolder, and the half-Horsebit felt like it struck the perfect balance between classic and contemporary. I’ve had my eye on a few silhouettes from the lineup, but it was love at first sight when the new Gucci Half Horsebit Shoulder bag hit Gucci.com.
First Look at the New Half Horsebit Shoulder Bag
Something about the bag’s relaxed, slouchy silhouette and defining Horsebit detail felt cool and very me. Plus, I liked the idea of it being more midsize, as so many of my bags are on the smaller size. You can say I told you so, as I’ve been adamant over the years about how little I carry, but since spending the fall in Paris, I’ve realized the need for a bag that can hold a bit more (I take my journal everywhere!).

I reached out to our friends at Gucci so that I could get a true feel for this bag and was thrilled when the bag showed up for me in Paris (to keep!), not a sample I’d have to send back.
True to its name, the bag’s defining element is the large gold Horsebit detail on the side, which complements the relaxed, slouchy shape of the bag. While it arrives in leather as well, the tiny GG embossed suede iteration suits the bag so well, and it both feels and looks luxe.
Everyday Functionality and What Fits Inside
I’ve used it all week since it first arrived, and I find that this bag is the definition of a great everyday bag—it’s not too large, and it’s not too small. For me, the size is ideal (I have the medium size, but a larger version is also available). I can fit everything from my iPhone 16, card case, passport holder, a pouch with miscellaneous cosmetics, and a notebook—with room for more.

Inside, there is one interior slit pocket, which, truthfully, I wish were a zippered pocket, because this is one of those bags that tends to swallow items into its corners. The shoulder strap on this bag is adjustable, offering several different lengths. I immediately noted this because the jacket I was wearing is roomy and relaxed, but I was able to adjust the length so that the bag fit nicely over my shoulder.
Suede continues to reign supreme in the handbag scene, and the color options are rich and completely fall-inspired. I have the brown, but the saffron yellow and sage green are also SO good. Additionally, if you don’t typically gravitate towards logos, the embossed GG Monogram appears understated—though there are also leather options available.

I’m curious if it’s hard to get in/out of with it being slouchy? I like the suede over leather since it is edgier.
Answered below – and yes the suede is to die for!
I really like this bag in smooth leather! It would be great if you let us know how easily you can open and access your belongings.
Hi!! The suede is slouchy and soft, so it’s not stiff at all – it’s pretty easy to get in and out of when worn over your shoulder with your opposite hand. I imagine it’s the same in the smooth leather.
I can’t even see the bag because the pants are so hideous!
The pants are super stylish, I want to buy the same ones.
Its OK Benedite. This was funny. Also, just pants. Hey everyone, just pants! Just a comment about pants.
Were you not educated in manners?
So rude!
How is not liking somebody’s pants rude? Americans are such snowflakes.
Wow, you can make this determination of all Americans? Believe me, there are plenty of Americans who lack manners like you.
And how does Benefite even know the commenters are American. We left the US for Europe over 25 years ago
Smart move 🙂
You know, I have seen some snarky comments towards Kaitlyn recently, and I just want to thank Kaitlyn for her articles and the work she puts in at Purseblog. I think it’s fantastic that she was able to stay in Paris for 2 months, and agree with the commenter who would like an article or two about her experience in Paris, I would love that as well! And, Kaitlyn, you look fab in your pants 😘
Hi! While I have chosen not to respond to negativity for the most part, I must acknowledge that of course I see and read all the comments. I am only human, and they do affect me, so I truly appreciate your kind words and your gratitude. 🙂
Paris was an unforgettable experience, and I look forward to sharing more with you all soon!
Totally agree. And when someone (politely) identifies a mistake or has a differing opinion, Kaitlyn and the PB team always respond with grace and professionalism.
We are a small team, wearing many hats and juggling multiple projects simultaneously – all because we love bags as much as you all do! That all said, sometimes we do miss things, and we truly appreciate any constructive feedback!
I’ve noticed that the comments here have become more and more rude over the years I’ve been looking at this site. I say go away – this is unacceptable. No one wants to read your unimportant nonsense. Save it.
It always makes me wonder, when someone writes a rude comment, is would you say it to her face?
I remembered Megs’ quote from her kids “don’t yuk someone else’s yum” it’s stuck with me since I read it somewhere on PB 🙂
That is forever my quote – “don’t yuck my yum!”
We all have different personal styles, and that is what should unite us here – we love bags and accessories and enjoy seeing the latest and how other people choose to style and wear them! It doesn’t need to be ‘for you’, but no one is going to make you wear pants you don’t like or carry a bag you don’t prefer!
Like I always say, how boring would it be if we all liked the exact same things!
Kaitlyn, I love that you get to spend time in Paris. I’ve been twice and eternally want to return. Please do a daily/weekly feature on what you observe on the streets in Paris, or interview someone stylish on the streets of Paris as to how they put together an outfit/choose a purse, the Parisian way. I would love that.
It was truly the best two months – Paris is such an amazing city. Like you, I’d been 3 times before and decided to try it for an extended period of time so I could get a feel for living there versus a vacation. Excited to share more with you all soon!
Huge fan of this relaunch! I will be picking up the Beatrix Large Suede in Brown at the private event next month which has the Horsebit detail on the top of the strap like the original in the early 2000’s which I missed out on. I like this bag as well….thinking of getting this in the sage green color or mustard yellow. Love Gucci!
I saw the yellow in the Gucci store when I was flying out of CDG earlier this week. It is stunning!!!
I love it! I ordered the medium in the variation black leather. I think it will make a great day to night bag. Thank you for this review! And I love your pants and style!
Thank you! I hope you love the bag as much as I already do!
hello,
can you tell us or show us what lengths the strap length range can be? I love a crossbody that sits around the hip, I can’t tell from the website measurements where it will sit and no one shows pics of the strap length let out and where it hits on the body at various lengths. Thanks so much!
Not a fan.
I really dig this!
Hi! Does the suede change color at the side you wear it? I bought a songmont and this happened!!
So far she’s ok!!!
Hi! your bag turned a little dark after some use? I bought one inspired by you but my bag turned a littles darken and in the bottom the suede , the gucci’s logo desapeared a little too…
Hi! I haven’t noticed that, but I did also spray it with a suede protectant. Have you worn it against anything dark? Could it be color transfer?
Yes, that’s exactly what I did. I applied a protective spray, and it became darker. I was disappointed with the result, and I’m considering selling it.
