Fendi

Fendi is Having a Moment and I’m Here for It

I'll take one of each, please

Though Fendi has been around for almost 100 years, the brand is having a serious moment right now—and I am very much here for it.

Since 1925, the Italian fashion house has produced some of the biggest bag trends the world has ever seen (and proudly worn). In fact, Fendi was the first handbag and fur workshop in Via del Plebiscito, Rome, and by the ’40s, the brand started to gain recognition beyond Italy’s capital city. Then, about two decades later, Karl Lagerfeld created Fendi’s now-famed logo, the “double f,” and it wasn’t long after that until the brand was picked up by Marvin Traub, the President of Bloomingdale’s, bringing Fendi to the U.S. for the first time.

From the Spy Bag to the Baguette (aka the it-bag that made waves in the ’90s and is now in the midst of a major comeback), Fendi has had almost a century of record success in the fashion world.

Beyond its storied past, I believe Fendi creates some of the best quality bags on the market. I know saying that is slightly controversial. (There are a handful of PurseForum members who aren’t thrilled with Fendi’s quality.) However, I have to say I’ve only had glowing experiences with my purchases – and I’ve tried many, many different bags and brands.

I first wrote about my experience with Fendi a couple months ago, detailing how I serendipitously stumbled upon a Fendi outlet while traveling through Italy. It was there that I managed to get my hands on a Petite 2Jours for $1,300 (compared to almost $2,300 in the States!). Even though the bag doesn’t have a top zipper (sigh), it’s one of my favorite purchases. Then, a couple months ago, I splurged and bought a Fendi Camera Case.

Both of my Fendi’s are soft calfskin (risky, I know!). I was worried the soft calfskin leather would scratch, but I can happily report that both bags are still in immaculate condition—and trust me, I haven’t been gentle with them. That’s probably the biggest reason why I’m such a Fendi supporter. Though the bags are pricey, I know they will last.

That’s why I have a loooong list of Fendi bags I’m lusting over. While I probably won’t buy a solid 70 percent of them, there are a few I’m strongly considering, namely the black and white Kan I Medium Grommet Shoulder Bag and the black Kan I Small Pearly-Studded Leather Shoulder Bag. If I had all the money in the world, I’d definitely go for the multicolor Kan I Aubusson-Print Leather Shoulder Bag. Ugh.

What do you think? Which one’s your favorite?
