When you think back to famed designer Phoebe Philo‘s time at Chloé, it’s likely that one iconic bag comes to mind: The Paddington. However, the designer was also responsible for another less-popular silhouette. That bag is about to become relevant once again because fall 2021 sees the return of another Philo-era bag: The Edith.
The Revival
The Chloé Edith Bag was first released in 2006, defined by its structured yet feminine silhouette and classic equestrian details. Its overall feel was representative of Chloé at the time, oozing a boho meets high-fashion feel. The return of this archival shape marks a turning point for Chloé, who last year named Gabriela Hearst as successor to Natacha Ramsay-Levi, while simultaneously being an ode to the House’s storied history.
Relaunched for Fall 2021, the re-edition of the Edith contains many of its original elements, such as its gently sloped shape, bold stitching that is an important design element, and front buckled pocket. The palette is quintessentially fall, featuring rich earth tones such as burgundy, sepia, and brown.
This reissue not only speaks to the timelessness of Chloé, but it serves as an important part of Hearst’s vision for the brand. She herself carried the original Edith bag, and its significance is not to be missed as the designer has held onto the piece, which was her first luxury bag, for all of this time.
Sizing and Materials
The reissue is available in a mini size (10.5” W x 10.25” H x 6” D), which reflects a modern, streamlined appeal and is meant to be carried via the bag’s tiny top handles or with its crossbody strap. The line also boasts a medium day bag (16.5” W x 9.1” H x 7.9” D) and a large day bag (16.9″ W x 13.4″ H x 2.4″ D). Crafted from rich buffalo leather and finished with antique brass hardware, the Edith is finished with a top zip closure and an interior zippered pocket. Novelty versions of the Edith are also available, like this multicolored recycled cashmere and buffalo leather option.
The Chloe Edith is one of those ones “that got away” for me. Definitely interested…
I love this bag and think the new versions are gorgeous!
I have always loved the Edith, now that I know there’s a mini size I have to have it!
I love Chloe but this is a no for me
I expected more from her.
This looks so cheap tbh. I used to love Chloe in 2017 and then after that they rlly seem to have gone downhill… sad.
Not everything needs a revival. This could have been cute but too many of the details make it look dated. Chloe’s hardware used to make it stand out, this bag looks to generic.
I’m a huge Chloé fan, I have several bags from the brand (circa Claire Waight Keller and Natascha Ramsay Levi), but this needs to stay in the 00s.
Utter garbaje…..
These look like they were purchased at a craft fair.
Love Chloe, hate this new bag
The Edith model remains one of the iconic. It was created in several versions. My favorites remain this medium version, the Conteen version and the hobo version. I had to sell the Conteen Camel version (very practical) because I wanted it in black.
I would like to remake a new collection of the Edith model (I’ll take it in mini version and the wide woven).
The mini version reminds me of the Chloe Edith Loaf. This old version that I have recently owned is too cute.
I love this bag
I gifted myself for my 40th birthday instead of a Hermès Kelly or Birkin. A real alternative.
