For those of you who think that Alexander McQueen handbags might be a little too out there for your taste, I may have found a bag for you.

Looking at the name of the bag, I was wondering what was really meant by the word camouflage. Did it have to do with the colors, the design, some hidden meaning? It is not that McQueen camouflaged his genius or his innate ability to take design to the next level. Perhaps the word surrounds the idea that the bag is a bit more understated than most of us might be used to.

The Alexander McQueen Camouflage Skull & Rose Tote has understated beauty and edge written all over it. In fact, at first glance I barely noticed the skulls intertwined with the rose print design. The combination of rose and skull print on the canvas provides a great way to introduce femininity and edginess at the same time. Since the skulls aren’t as prominent as the roses, they do require a double take in order to be noticed. The canvas has wonderful brown leather trip and a great chain strap with 7″ drop. Everything works together in perfect harmony for a fabulous tote that would look good on the shoulder of so many women no matter what your taste may be! Buy through Saks for $930.

Especially now, it’s fairly obvious why the man was so obsessed with skulls.
My handbags are supposed to bring me the joy of living. I don’t need to carry a representation of death. I know it lurks, but I definitely don’t need to see it.

i couldn’t agree with you more!

  • Anna

I love it… but now that he had commited suicide which is sad.,.. i feel too that the skulls represent death and having three kids, maybe i will pass.

I need to teach kids optimism and love of life…

I agree Anna. I’m a skull fanatic [I own kick-ass sterling silver rings; a blinged out compact, as well as an expressly made leather pouch with a Day of the Dead Skull embroidered on it]. But now since Mr. McQueen committed suicide; carrying this bag would be a bit too, well, creepy for me. I don’t have children; but I hear what you’re trying to convey to your babies loud and clear! Good for you–

its an artistic piece….he is a mastermind of design !

    • Abhishek

Completely agree with you……what a creative mind he was!

This is gorgeous. The idea of using roses with skulls is classic but the way the skulls are “camoflaged” into the roses makes this new, elegant, and absolutely something I would love to carry.

  • Jesse

This a beautiful bag. I love the darkness behind the bag. He was a beautiful person.

Every time I see the Alexander McQueen skull motif (on scarves, etc), I’m reminded of death. My mom, who has cancer, mentioned this to me years ago, and I haven’t been able to shake that feeling since. Now that he’s dead, I really feel this bag is far to “dark” for words.

    • Fiona

Cge, I have the bag , the scarf, as I have Thomas Wylde skuls bag, and another gorgeous skull ring.I never relate them to death, but to rock´n´roll, some naughty vibe.Like in dreams, they say you need to interprete the symbol not literally….

  • Many other designers implement skulls into their work and many people really love that style. I personally do. I can see how some see his pieces as being very dark, but he was really genius in his designing. He always used skulls and I personally still love to see skulls – which we will from other designers for years to come.

While it is beautiful to look at the whole skull thing is so overdone these days. I stay away from anything with skulls on it now. It just ends up looking dated, I don’t care how artistic it is.

  • Chris

As an art lover, I can admire the design.
However, I have lost loved ones to illness and death. To me, death is not to worship, there is nothing cool about it. It makes people feel desperate, sad and lost. It takes years to overcome that feeling. I would not want to wear skulls.

      I couldn’t agree more, Chris.

This bag represents bittersweetness, not death alone. That idea would never have surfaced had McQueen still been alive. He left the best part of himself- his artistry. He was never trying to depress anyone, he made the world more beautiful with his designs and this piece is no exception.

  • PhotoGirl

I think the bag is beautiful and I’d be delighted to carry it.

That McQueen chose to leave us is tragic.
That we all have a date with death is inevitable.

  • Joe

He was so much more than the skull motif. Those are just his lower priced items. Look to his higher end stuff to judge his designs and meaning.

A skull is a skull, its what your personal baggage attributes to it.

  • Mochababe73

I like it. This was apart of McQueen’s style. I don’t find the use of skulls to be dark, and this is done in a different way. If the background were a lighter color, maybe some wouldn’t think that it would be “dark”.

First of all RIP Alexander McQueen you were an absolute fashion god! I just discovered your blog a week ago and even though I might not be able to afford half these bags I appreciate your information on them. This bag is Fab and yes, I agree that after his death its kinda gory to be looking at such a piece but it is also it..oh alexander..why

  • Beth

I think it’s sublime…..and a lovely piece that represents his work.
The juxtaposition of the skull and rose is a metaphor for the emotions/journey we take as human beings.
For me, he’s in a different category…I consider him an artist, not so much as a “designer” and carrying/wearing his gems are my small way of honoring his work.
