V73 Canvas Printed Tote, $265 via Luisa Via Roma

Today’s start to feel a little bit like Groundhog Day, isn’t it? A few hours ago, we brought to you a story about Louis Vuitton suing a media company for violating its trademarks, and now we have news of a company that thinks it’s a good idea to print the visage of an Hermes Birkin on a canvas bag: the V73 Canvas Printed Tote. The day’s handbag news is downright retro.

For those who missed it, Thursday Friday already had this bright idea, and although the number of people who I still see carrying them in New York City would indicate that it definitely hit one something that people were interested in, it didn’t end well. Hermes sued them for trademark infringement, the lawsuit was settled privately and the bags are no longer available. (Well, at least not with an Hermes print – Thursday Friday moved along to Chanel recently.)

What V73 has used seems to be more of an artistic rendering than a straight-up photo like that used by Thursday Friday, but other than that, the concept is exactly the same and I’m betting that Hermes’ legal department will react similarly and eventually get a similar settlement. If you’d like to own a tote like this, I’d urge you to look for a secondhand Thursday Friday version instead – although the appearance of the leather grain on this version is pretty cool, the price is almost three times what the original version (the original copy? This is so…Baudrillardian) sold for. Buy through Luisa Via Roma for $265.

Also the ThursdayFriday was only 30$.

I think that Hermes should occupy itself with other copyright infringements. This canvas tote is really cheeky, sort of like a bumper sticker that says “My other car is a Porsche” or something. Conversely, there are blatant Birkin rip-offs in Town Shoes and Browns Shoes (Canadian shoe stores; I don’t know if you have them in the US), and those products are clearly counterfeited versions of Hermes bags that are sold in a mainstream chain store. IMHO, if Hermes is going to spend its money on a court case suing a company for copying its bags, then it should leave the gently humorous canvas bags alone and go after chain retail stores that sell carbon-copy versions of its bags instead.

I’d say that unless the image used was made from a photo from Hermes, I’m not certain how Hermes could have a legal leg to stand on any more than Campbell’s Soup could have sued Andy Warhol for using its image in his paintings. However, for the fun of it, I just ran this past my husband, who is an attorney. He opines that Hermes would have grounds to sue because another maker has intentions of turning a profit based on an Hermes’ patented style design. In any event, I think these canvas bags are dorky.

I agree – and to be honest, have an image on a canvas that isn’t the actual hermes bag isn’t as bad as some of the brands out there that actually have designs similar to the birkin.

V73 probably knows that they’re going to get sued and they’re doing it for the “free” publicity.

By the way, I love the Thursday Friday totes and thought they were hilarious!

I don’t see what the big deal is. These bags are fun. I would use it at the store.

What’s the big deal, nobody is going to be satisfied with this tote over a Birkin and Hermes isn’t going to loose any money off its Birkin sales. The horrible truth is that when a woman wants a Birkin, she will want to save money for a Birkin, not a screen print on a tote; this tote will never ‘replace’ the Birkin! The tote doesn’t even pretend to be a Birkin like all the cheap knockoffs you see at a mall. It is not a Birkin replica, a Birkin inspired, a designer-borrowing-inspiration-from-Hermes or an illegal cheap copy. The idea is cheeky and clever, further establishing the icon that the Birkin has become in modern fashion and modern culture.

Although, I do have to mention that it would be amazingly hilarious if a shopper was carrying this tote while browsing the official Hermes Boutique!

It’s ridiculous to even buy a canvas print bag for 265. That aside, Hermes should just take it in stride. The bag is quite funny and in a way is promoting Hermes. kind of.

I must confess I like this idea in canvas, it’s amazing. I think at Hermes they like these two bags

Wooow that is way too much money for something like this.

I wonder if Hermes is also planning on suing Kelly Bensimone because her new handbag line is very Birkin-esque.
