If there’s one thing fashion has made abundantly clear in recent years, it’s that nothing ever really stays in the past. As nostalgia continues to shape the way we dress and shop, the late 2010s and early 2020s will undoubtedly be remembered as the era of the revival. From archival designs to re-editions of long-forgotten favorites, fashion’s biggest names have been looking back to move forward.
What began as a growing fascination with the early 2000s quickly evolved into a full-fledged movement, with designers revisiting their archives and bringing some of their most recognizable styles back into the spotlight. Suddenly, “re-edition,” “vintage-inspired,” and “pulled from the archives” became familiar phrases—and some of the handbag world’s biggest It-bags were styles we’d seen before.
Louis Vuitton has been no exception. While the early 2020s brought a noticeable shift toward leather and more understated designs, leaving some to wonder if the brand’s iconic Monogram canvas was losing its place in the spotlight, the answer has become increasingly clear: Monogram isn’t going anywhere.
In fact, if the last few years are any indication, it’s having a major moment once again. As we head further into the mid-2020s, Louis Vuitton has continued to revisit some of its most coveted designs from the ’90s and early 2000s, giving a new generation the chance to rediscover them. And now, there’s another archival favorite joining the lineup.
The Marelle Was Made for the Early 2000s
The original Louis Vuitton Marelle debuted in the early 2000s, with a silhouette that perfectly captured the understated sophistication of the era. Slim yet structured, the design featured a sleek flap closure secured by buckle-style straps, giving the otherwise minimalist shape a distinctive finishing touch.
Crafted in Louis Vuitton’s signature Monogram canvas, the Marelle was refined without feeling overly fussy. And while its proportions and pared-back aesthetic were very much of their time, the silhouette has aged remarkably well—so much so that more than two decades later, it feels right at home in the current handbag landscape.
For Fall 2026, Louis Vuitton is bringing the Marelle back, this time reimagined as a modern-day re-edition. Crafted in the House’s iconic Monogram canvas, the new design takes its cues from the original Marelle Pochette, retaining its elongated east-west shape and streamlined flap silhouette. There are a few notable updates, however. Where the original buckles served a functional purpose, the new Marelle swaps them for snap closures, leaving the buckle detail purely decorative.
The New Marelle Blends Past and Present
The re-edition also offers a bit more versatility than its predecessor, thanks to a removable strap that allows it to transition from a shoulder bag to a clutch. In a clever nod to the Marelle’s history, the new design essentially brings together elements of the two original versions: the Pochette, which could be worn as a belt bag or carried as a clutch, and the traditional shoulder bag.
With its archival-inspired silhouette and updated functionality, the new Marelle feels like a particularly fitting addition to Louis Vuitton’s growing lineup of heritage revivals.
