I don’t understand why raffia is so expensive? Are we only paying for the designer label or is it difficult to manufacture? With that said the Beehive bag is adorable.

They are usually produced in Madagascar where the labor cost is low. So, with this kind of brands you pay the logo.

It’s not difficult to manufacture and the cost is relatively low. I’m a fan of raffia baskets and went to see them being made by local artisans. In the end, what we’re really paying for is the label and the marketing behind it.

My theory is that it’s targeting “White Lotus” type of clientele. I didn’t get the raffia category until I saw people carrying various of these at a Rosewood resort. At that moment I understood it all. Much like the Après-ski collections every year. Limited occasions but part of a uniform for those occasions.
