In the summer of 2020, one of the most anticipated revivals of the decade finally hit the scene. The Gucci Jackie was back. Aptly re-named the Gucci Jackie 1961 after the year it was created and the style icon it was originally created for, the new Jackie quickly rose to It-bag status, appearing on the arms of celebs, style stars, and handbag lovers alike.
With its curved lines and half-moon-like shape, the bag’s silhouette remained, but this time it was reimagined with a modern twist. Then-Creative Director Alessandro Michele looked to the Gucci archives to make this storied bag relevant for today’s consumers, and make it relevant, he did.
The first re-editions came in a range of colors and sizes with a removable and adjustable strap allowing for multiple ways of wearing and carrying. Since then, the Gucci Jackie 1961 has become a staple for the House, re-appearing season after season in an array of new versions. While the House of Gucci is on the precipe of change, its archival revivals will likely remain relevant as they easily transcend both seasons and generations.
Shine On
While the Gucci Jackie can make for a great day bag in a neutral hue or a pop of color, and it’s a bag I’m really a fan of, I never felt the needy pull towards owning one, but lately, this sparkly, mini iteration of the fan-favorite bag just won’t leave me alone. I’ve discussed how my views towards bags have changed, and now I’m all about adding fun pieces to my collection that feel like me versus classics or purely functional bags. While my methodology is not for everyone, it’s brought joy back into my collection and made the decision-making process feel much less heavy or stressful.
I first spotted the Gucci Jackie 1961 Mini with Lizard detailing and crystalized mesh in black a few months back, and while I thought it was a rare beauty, it wasn’t until I discovered it in ballet pink that I decided I didn’t just want it, I had to have it. Of course, as soon as I came to that realization, I began seeing it all over my social media feeds, and now I can’t stop daydreaming about it. It feels special, combining House history with a bit of fun modern flair, from the lizard trim to the GG mesh crystal. I’m simply obsessed.
