The 16 Most Interesting Celebrity Bag Looks of 2016

At long last: here’s a list of things that happened in 2016 that won’t make you want to drown your sorrows in a tub of champagne. Let’s all take a moment to suspend all thoughts of global turmoil or life-changing rock stars who left us far too soon, and focus instead on those who are still with us and carrying great designer handbags. This year was brimming over with obvious winners (Gucci everything), as well as some sleeper hits and up-and-coming styles that we’d definitely like to draw your attention to before the year officially concludes. Here’s to a happier, more fashionable new year.

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show and all of its related fittings and press appearances gave us TONS of great bag looks this year. This ensemble that Alessandra Ambrosio donned for a VS fitting in NYC was particularly memorable. She’s carrying a gorgeous exotic Celine Python Classic Box Bag. The Celine Box certainly gained a lot of traction with celebs in 2016.

Bella Hadid
Lady Dior Bag

Bella Hadid had an entire two week period of great bag looks that coincided with a whirlwind of press appearances she made as the new face of Dior Beauty. She wore and carried Dior exclusively during this period, but she was unforgettable in this gorgeous Dior gown, and her ombre sequined Lady Dior Bag was the perfect choice for this look.

Chiara Ferragni
Fendi DotCom Bag
$2,600 via Nordstrom

Fendi made sure that one of their newest buzzworthy styles had its moment in the spotlight at various international fashion weeks this year. Here’s blogger/shoe designer Chiara Ferragni carrying a blue Fendi DotCom Bag to a show at Milan Fashion Week. Naturally, it’s been accessorized with more than one Fendi Bag Bug.

Chrissy Teigen
The Row Hunting Bag
$2,950 via Neiman Marcus

Chrissy Teigen is basically the North Star of our bagiverse. She supplies us with near-constant press photos of gorgeous designer bags, but we were particularly taken with this The Row Hunting Bag, which she recently carried through the airport like it was NBD.

Elsa Hosk
Loewe Puzzle Bag
$2,350 via Nordstrom

I continue to struggle to wrap my mind around the Loewe Puzzle Bag, which was popular with certain enigmatic celebs such as Elsa Hosk this year. Whether you love it or hate it (and it is a rather polarizing style) it does stick with you.

Gigi Hadid
Miu Miu Dahlia Bag
$2,100 via Saks

The Miu Miu Dahlia Bag had a long summer flirtation with celebs in 2016, and while its popularity seemed to ebb in fall and winter, I definitely think it’s worth revisiting here.

Jessica Alba
Pop and Suki Camera Bag
$195 via Pop and Suki

Disclaimer: This is an unexceptional photo of Jessica Alba carrying an exceptionally priced new bag from Pop and Suki. Pop and Suki is a brand new label from Suki Waterhouse and her her best gal pal Poppie Jamie. Right now they make exactly two different handbag styles and a wide variety of strap, tassel, and luggage tag options that allow you to further customize your own bag look. This is definitely a brand to watch.

Karlie Kloss
Louis Vuitton Spring 2017 Top Handle Bag

Karlie Kloss was the first big celeb to carry this as-yet-unnamed bag away from the Spring 2017 Louis Vuitton runway. She was spotted carrying it in the West Village mere days after it made its fashion debut. It has yet to hit shelves.

Lais Ribeiro
Elena Ghisellini Felina Bag
$477 via Forzieri

Lais Ribeiro‘s little Elena Ghisellini Felina Bag certainly caught our eye during the parade of pre-show Victoria’s Secret fittings. The Felina comes in many different colorways and patterns, some of which retail for under $500.

Laverne Cox
Hermès Birkin

Now we’ll take a moment to reflect on the enduring power of the Birkin. It’s so omnipresent that usually we don’t even include it in these year-end wrap-ups, but this year we said “Why not?” Laverne Cox carries Hermès now almost exclusively. Here she is with one of her favorite Birkins outside of Catch, which incidentally was the best place to spot celebs over dinner in 2016.

Marjorie Harvey
Hermès Himalayan Birkin

Marjorie Harvey is one of the most prolific bag collectors in the known universe, so naturally she got an invite to the Hermès show at Paris Fashion Week. She brought along one of the rarest Hermès bags in existence, of course, as one does. We did the math on her entire personal handbag collection, by the way, and we invite you review those figures.

Nicky Hilton
Alexander Wang Attica Bag
$950 via Nordstrom

Since parting ways with Balenciaga in 2015, Alexander Wang has been able to channel all of his creative energy into his own designs once again. Wang created a bonafide handbag hit this year with the Alexander Wang Attica bag. It ended up in many celeb hands, including Nicky Hilton‘s.

Nicki Minaj
Chanel Top Handle Flap Bag
Shop Chanel Bags via Vestiaire Collective

We’re still in love with Nicki Minaj‘s bubblegum pink Chanel Top Handle Flap Bag. She’s seen here carrying it while leaving Catch with Meek Mill, but she carried it many times this year. Could a bag be more quintessentially Nicki Minaj? Possibly, but that’s TBD.

Olivia Palermo
Valentino Lock Bag
$2,345 via Net-a-Porter

Olivia Palermo may or may not have planned this entire Paris Fashion Week outfit around this beautiful studded Valentino Lock Bag. In either case, the bag and the outfit have stuck with us.

Rihanna
Louis Vuitton x Frank Gehry Twisted Monogram Bag

We must again pay tribute to the lasting link between Rihanna and her special Louis Vuitton x Frank Gehry Twisted Monogram Bag. (Their relationship is still going strong after several years.) This is one of the most memorable ensembles she paired it with in 2016.

Tracee Ellis Ross
Gucci Ghost Marmont Bag
$1,890 via Gucci

Finally, we would be doing you all a major disservice if we did not pay special attention to Gucci‘s many great successes in 2016. Here’s a bag that combines all of the most popular Gucci trends into a single design: the Gucci Ghost Marmont Bag. Tracee Ellis Ross carried this glorious Gucci while shopping at The Grove earlier this year.
