Zebra print for babies? I can get behind that.

From time to time around these parts, we tackle the somewhat tricky issue of diaper bags – do you go for a pattern or a solid? Leather or nylon? High-end or practical? The same one no matter what you’re wearing or several different ones to coordinate with your outfits? As I always feel compelled to mention in these posts, I’m single and without children, so I’ve never had to make these decisions for myself, which makes your input in the comments all the more important.

If I was looking to spend a little money on a fun diaper bag right now, though, the Kate Spade Union Square Stevie Baby Bag would be a strong contender – it’s patterned to hide wear but not too girly, and animal prints (particularly those involving black) look right at home in my wardrobe.

The Color Seigle from Balenciaga: True Chameleon

Seriously, I feel bad for all of you that I have taken on this roller coaster ride with me that is titled “Finding my perfect Balenciaga Bag“. My problem always came down to finding the right color for my Giant City (that I was already set on purchasing). I thought maybe Anthracite would be the perfect color choice but then realized I have plenty of grey bags in my collection. So while browsing Balenciaga.com over the weekend, I felt an overwhelming feeling of excitement when I saw the Giant City in Seigle.

The color was absolutely everything I was looking for and needed. My handbag collection lacks a tan/beige neutral and I loved the lightness of the color. The color Seigle looks fresh, crisp, and stunning. I own brown bags, but nothing light like what I thought this color would bring. So I ordered the bag and paid for overnight shipping, because I HAD. TO. HAVE. THE. BAG.

Yesterday the bag arrived and I varied in feeling disappointed, to liking the bag, to being unsure if I had the right bag, to questioning my eye sight. This Balenciaga bag may not have been the exact color I expected, but in different lighting it looks close to it. That is why this leather is a true chameleon.

Santiago Gonzalez Creates a $5,200 Crocodile Soccer Ball

Have you noticed the lack of posts on PurseBlog in the past week or two? I am almost embarrassed to say it is because Vlad and I have become so enthralled following World Cup Soccer that our work productivity has been compromised. As much as I love sports, soccer has never been my favorite sport. But there is something about a World Event that sucks me in. I even jumped off the couch this morning during the USA win over Algeria. It is that bad.

I saw this the other day and I could not pass up sharing with you all. As I said, my mind is on soccer right now, but I was waiting to see which designer would create a soccer themed item. While not a handbag, Santiago Gonzalez of Nancy Gonzalez created a Crocodile Skin Soccer Ball designed for Harrods. The item is no longer is stock on the website (sold out?!).

Dior kicks it up a notch for Resort 2011

Sometimes in fashion, the phrase “ask and ye shall receive” holds true. I’m pleased to say that appears to be the case with my recent complaint about Dior’s somewhat tedious bag line – a few of the bags from the brand’s recently presented Resort 2011 line caught my attention.

For me, the clear standout of the line is this Dior Resort 2011 Tote, which doesn’t have an official name or price as of yet. Although the design is fairly simple, it manages to represent everything that a Dior bag should be – it’s feminine, Parisian and obviously designed by Dior.

The Jimmy Choo Nica isn’t bad, but I’m not convinced

It’s always a bit disappointing to be able to look at a bag and know immediately how it could have been better. I can understand that after a certain point, design teams are unable to be objective about their products and less-than-perfect bags get made by every brand, ever season, but I still get a little frustrated when I see one.

The Jimmy Choo Nica Tote would be a part of that group. I like nearly everything about it – the rough, tough finish of the leather, the chaotic tangle of chains that forms the handle attachments, the slightly unfinished feel of the design. All that stuff is great, but the proportion is totally throwing me off – if only the body of the bag had been a bit bigger and a bit wider, I would absolutely love this tote.

Diane Von Furstenberg gets in on the box clutch game

Usually, elegant little box clutches are the sole province of ultra high-end companies like Bottega Veneta and Alexander McQueen, who have turned their knot and skull clutches, respectively, into collector’s items and must-have evening bags.

For whatever reason, “contemporary” brands seem more reticent to step in to that particular bag market, despite the fact that McQueen’s skull clutches all but proved that the shape can be updated for a younger audience. Now one of the segment’s biggest labels is taking a shot at it: is the Diane Von Furstenberg Lytton Minaudiere Clutch a sign of more to come from the brand’s young bag line?

Salvatore Ferragamo iPad Case

Every time we talk about Salvatore Ferragamo we also talk about how much we love the brand. And with that we talk about the quality and elegance of their products. We may not cover Ferragamo as much as other designers on PurseBlog, but that does not reflect on lack of beauty, style, or craftsmanship.

Joining the growing list of designers to release iPad cases, Salvatore Ferragamo announces they too will offer a collection of iPad cases ranging in price from $290 to $390. To be honest, as much as I loved the Louis Vuitton iPad Case and Gucci iPad Case, the Ferragamo iPad Cases might be my favorite.

New Alexander Wang at ShopBop

Alexander Wang is sticking with the bags that are working for him for his fall 2010 line. While there may be some new additions, the classics from Alexander Wang will remain staples. These include the Rocco, Brenda, and Diego. For Fall 2010, expect more of the same in different colors and materials. Lately I have … Read more

This retro Gucci crossbody bag has my attention

No one knows exactly how long the mini crossbody trend will last, but put me on the record as hoping that this shape stays around as a wardrobe staple for years to come. Not only are minibags delightfully functional, but they’re easily modified to embody nearly any style from hippie to industrial. In this case, the mood of the Gucci 1973 Small Shoulder Bag is clear – it’s all about the retro throwback.

This bag comes as no surprise to anyone that saw the looks from Gucci’s Fall 2010 runway show – I would have pegged the look as more late 60s than early 70s, but the retro shapes and color palette were omnipresent throughout the bags featured in the show. The altered Gucci logo is the touch that really completes the look.

Never underestimate the utility of a tailored black bag

Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in the pursuit of the Next Big Thing and not give enough credit to the classic designs that every woman should have represented in her closet. I’m guilty of it as well, but while we’re in the summer dregs of the fashion cycle, I thought it’d be nice to revisit some classic shapes and consider why they’ve earned such a widely appreciated spot in our wardrobes.

First up, we’ve got a clean-lined black leather tote, which is a bag that almost every woman has owned in some version over the course of her mature life. The DKNY Work Shopper Bag in particular is a reasonably priced iteration that I would be proud to take to work (you know, if I had a real job that required me to get dressed in something other than gym shorts.)

White(ish)-Hot Mulberry Ostrich Bayswater

The Mulberry Bayswater deserves credit where credit is due, it is truly much more of an iconic piece than many give it credit for. The shape and style of the bag has been compared to the Hermes Birkin countless times, and while there are similar aspects they are still very different bags. When I saw my first Ostrich Bayswater bags I fell in love. Ostrich is not a material for everyone. Complaints often revolve around the texture of ostrich skin being a turn off. And that may be the case for you. But some love the added dimension the skin gives their bag.

And if you fall into the category of loving ostrich skin, the Mulberry Ostrich Bayswater may be a bag for you.
