Over the past few years, a new handbag market has emerged. It’s not exactly contemporary, but it’s more attainable and casual than premiere designer, and it’s probably most accurately referred to as “premium contemporary.” It offers the same sophisticated finish that comes with much pricier bags, and pioneering premium contemporary brands like Alexander Wang and 3.1 Phillip Lim have found a market flush with consumers looking for a particular mix of style and ubstance. With its newly launched handbags, New York-based A.L.C. is looking to compete for the attention of those discerning shoppers.
Started five years ago by stylist-turned-designer Andrea Lieberman, A.L.C. offers a tightly edited but luxurious take on modern necessities. The handbags follow along in that aesthetic; traditional, familiar shapes, most with minimal hardware, in a stark palette of black, white and leopard. The designs aren’t fussy or overbaked, and no matter your particular structure preference, there’s likely one that fits your style. Our favorite? The gorgeous Lucas satchel in leopard calf hair.
