The Louis Vuitton Capucines Is a House Staple Every Season

A look at my favorite summer versions of the three sizes of this iconic bag

Some bags feel like they have existed for all of the time, and when I remember that they have been around for less than a decade, I am surprised. There seems to be no way that the Louis Vuitton Capucines is anything less than a forever staple at the House of Louis Vuitton, but the Capucines was only introduced 8 years ago in 2013.

The Capucines was part of Louis Vuitton’s Fall/Winter 2013 collection and named after the address where Louis Vuitton opened his first store in 1854 on Rue Neuve-des-Capucines. While some bags feel seasonal, the Capucines was a modern classic from the start. In fact, the bag easily looked as if it were one of the first bags designed by the house, an inherently timeless design. Each Capucines features incredible savoir-faire, with only the most notable leathers selected to create uniquely soft and rich leather designs. The LV monogram that sits atop the front center of the bag is partially covered in leather as well. The top handle is thick and durable and at either end, you’ll find circular hardware with elegant stud detailing. Though most leave the flap inside, there is a double carrying style with the option to leave the flap inside or outside.

The Capucines Sizes

Like many cornerstone bags, the Capucines is reimagined seasonally in different styles and designs, offering everything from stunning exotic Capucines with diamond details to more classic versions as well. For Summer 2021, we had a look at three new versions of the Capucines, in each of the three available sizes: MM, BB, and Mini.

The Capucines MM

The Capucines MM is the largest of the sizes, great for getting back to work or for someone who likes to carry a bit more with them. This version is crafted from Ecru Beige canvas with tan calfskin details on the flap, top handle, and LV initials. The strap, which is removable, gives the bag an entirely new look – a more laid-back feeling than the typical clean and structured lines of the design (this strap also features three Monogram embossed flowers which is such a beautiful touch). The bag is lined in cowhide and has a compartmented interior with a zipped pocket and a snap hook to secure your belongings. Measurements are 12.4 x 7.9 x 4.3 inches. Price is $5400 via LouisVuitton.com.

Capucines BB

The next bag we had, which is my favorite, is the Louis Vuitton Capucines BB that features a pink, red, and beige combination of striped canvas with an embroidered Monogram flowers motif that is entirely fun. The two-color braided leather top handle is another nice touch along with the wide removable strap. The interior of each Capucines is much like the next but the dimensions on this bag are a bit smaller than the MM, at 10.6 x 7.1 x 3.5 inches. This bag is the ideal mix of large enough to carry your essentials without weighing you down and this specific style exudes a playful, summery vibe. Price is $5350 via LouisVuitton.com.

The Mini Capucines

Lastly, there’s the Mini Capucines to round out the trio of sizes. This cute mini bag offers the same recognizable design in a pint-sized version, which immediately makes it feel more playful. Because this bag is boxy and rigid, the smaller size allows for a more casual feel, especially in bright colors like this version. Neon leather with offsetting grey is an eye-catching pair, especially in the grained Taurillon leather. Like the other sizes of the Capucines, you can leave the flap inside or out for a new look and the strap is removable as well (however, not adjustable nor is it on the other sizes). This Mini version is 8.3 x 5.5 x 3.1 inches. Price is $4550 at LouisVuitton.com.

When it comes to iconic bags for the House of Louis Vuitton, there is a lengthy list to choose from and the Capucines rounds out the group well.
