I’ve loved handbags for as long as I can remember, and from a very young age, I knew I would become a collector of them one day. There was something about bags that enticed me. Something far beyond the superficial. The story they told, how they are essentially an extension of ourselves.
Eventually, I would end up making a career out of my passion, and it wasn’t until I began working in the industry that I became familiar with Loewe. Highly coveted by those in the know, Loewe is one of those brands that somehow still remains more under-the-radar than other brands. That intrigue, among other things, makes Loewe so special.
Founded in Madrid in 1846, Loewe began as a leather goods company and focuses on that craft to this day; and as a handbag lover in 2022, when you think of Loewe, you likely think of the iconic Puzzle bag, and for a good reason.
A Modern Classic
When it comes to bags, handbag lovers and fashion industry insiders alike often categorize a bag as one of two things: classic/timeless or trendy. But every once in a while, a bag so versatile comes along that it can actually be considered both. Yup, you guessed it, I’m talking about the Loewe Puzzle Bag.
Introduced in 2014, the Loewe Puzzle Bag was Creative Director Jonathon Anderson’s first bag for the Spanish Design House. Though it was originally designed as a Men’s Duffle, the bag transcends genders and can be worn by all. Not only that, it can be categorized into many different styles—it’s classic yet modern, with its origami-like shape and versatile ways of carrying. It can be dressed up or dressed down—worn with athleisure or your best look for dining out; the Puzzle bag can do it all.
A Puzzle for All
What makes the Puzzle so unique is that the original remains a coveted item season after season, with little change to the bag’s original shape. Though the line has been expanded upon, offering new shapes, sizes, and colors, the iconic shape is here to stay, making the Puzzle one of the most versatile bags of the last ten years. With varying sizes to choose from, there is a puzzle for everyone, and you can bet that it will never go out of style.
I have yet to add a Puzzle Bag to my collection, but it is a bag I keep returning to season after season, and this fall, this House staple is reinvigorated again with new details. The Puzzle Edge Bag features the iconic and distinctive geometric lines, but this time over-stitched edges and a hand-woven top handle further enhance the bag. It’s these little details that, literally, add an edge to an already beloved bag. High on my lust list, I’m falling in love with the Puzzle all over again.
