A year and a half ago, my mom and I travelled to Paris together to celebrate her 70th birthday. It was on that trip that my mom got her first designer bag—a green Loewe Puzzle Bag with a matching wallet. I didn’t realize it at the time, but it was in that moment that she was bitten by the bug—the designer bag bug, that is.
Seven months later, I went back to Paris for my birthday with a surprise request from my mother, who months earlier swore her purchase was a one-off, a treat for her milestone birthday. Could I stop into Loewe to pick up a summer bag for her?
Of course, I said yes, arriving stateside with a Loewe Raffia Crossbody in hand. A few months later, and one trip to Bottega Veneta later, my mom would leave with her third designer bag, the Andiamo. It was then that I knew this was now her thing, like it had been mine all these years.
I couldn’t have been more excited! Since then, we’ve talked on the phone for hours, mulling over her next purchase. Her dream was a piece from Louis Vuitton’s LV x TK relaunch, which proved impossible, but as I write this post, she’s in Europe with her sights set on something else.
As a newbie collector, here’s what’s on my mom’s wishlist this year, plus the items I’d consider surprising her with (and the items I’m currently convincing her she needs—Picotin, I’m looking at you!).
Surprise Mom With a Little Luxury

This proves you’re never too old to enjoy nice bags. A Loewe raffia crossbody was an excellent choice for your mom. I bought mine three years ago for a trip to Greece and it has become my summer favorite. I hope she loves hers too!
I just got the update from Germany – she got her Alma and bag charm too!
This article is so sweet and lovely – but the follow-up pic! Love it! Thank you for sharing to you and your lovely mom.
Your Mom is so cute!
What a lovely article! I often find your articles informative but impersonal, and this is darling. Best wishes to you and your mother!
Thank you for the kind words!
The good thing about travelling to Europe is not just seeing art and history. But luxury shopping comes out much better. Tell your mother to plan a trip to Madrid, that she will be surprised by the story and on top of that she can go to Casa Loewe.
