Our Favorite Water-Resistant Bags for Rainy Days

April showers bring May flowers...and water resistant bags

Spring has sprung and I am so excited for the warmer temperatures. April is notorious for being a rainy month in many parts of the world, and where I live is no exception. I don’t mind rainy days and I actually love an afternoon thunderstorm, but I definitely have to select my bag of the day wisely when I know it’s going to rain.

I tend to wear bags that I know will hold up well against water and won’t absorb the rain. I think of my bags as water resistant versus water proof, since most bags will show some signs of moisture if the rain is heavy enough. However, some really great materials for wet weather are nylon, PVC, coated canvas, patent leather, and even Saffiano and embossed leathers. Calfskin or lambskin leathers, silk, and suede handbags should be avoided during wetter days, as they can soak up the moisture and show signs of water damage. Some finishes on calfskin will make a bag more prone to absorbing moisture and others will repel it, but I don’t like to take any chances on my bags.

I am planning on spending a lot of time outside this season, and I have rounded up my favorite weather resistant bags for spring as a result. My favorites are below. Do you have a go-to rainy day bag? Share with us in the comments!

Good picks! These types of articles appeal to me as I live in Seattle. When it rains, I typically switch to the Goyard St. Louis or Longchamp nylon tote. I also have the Staud Shirley in clear PVC. When I first moved here, I would use those foldable ecobags as a rain cover for my leather bags, but it just became a hassle.

Longchamp le pliage or mz wallace are als great options

When I moved to London, I bought a Dolce and Gabbana Sicily bag made out of opaque glossy black rubber. It keeps my things perfectly dry whether in heavy “plopping” rain or the misty rain that just gets everywhere. My very posh landlady thought it was patent leather! Perfect, polished rainy day in town bag! In fact, I wouldn’t mind getting a second in another color. Hmm…

I’ve actually been pondering the Prada Nylon small messenger bag (1-buckle) as a rainy – park alternative. I have used my LV Speedy 25B in DE in the rain but I’d rather not. I do like that these Prada bags are zippered unlike other similar styles are buttoned. I have experienced a bag flip during Covid and was upset.

Love the Versace Virtus. I hope you’ll write about La Medusa bags, they are awesome! Thank you.

That Prada Nylon baby pink on silver hardware is super 2000s and I’m living for it – very Mean Girls look!
