Tory Burch Amulet Tote

By Amanda Mull RSS Feed on Nov 23, 2009. More in Savvy.

I’ve been somewhat critical of sweater knit bags before, and for the most part, I still stand behind that completely – they present some stylistic and functional challenges to their wearers that leather bags don’t.

But despite those things, the Tory Burch Amulet Tote strikes me as a sweater bag done well. I’m not sure if it’s the color, the leather trim, or the bag’s structure, but the whole idea just seems to make a lot more sense in this context than it does in others. And it has to be said – this particular bag looks a lot more high-end than those made out of knit.

Project Runway: This is how the world ends, not with a bang but a whimper. pr finale

Thursday night saw the end to our long national nightmare, also known as Project Runway Season 6. Three brave but dubiously qualified women took the catwalk of battle and squared off with their marginal design talents and delusions of grandeur, and only one would be left standing among the tattered ruins of swatches and…felt helmets?

That’s what those were, right? Whatever, it’s probably best to not ask so many questions, as the answers have been unsatisfying for the entirety of the season (although I’ve got another one – how was it that the designers were shown introducing their collections on the runway when all the press from the event said that they made no appearances and that the designers were not identified? Was that staged?) At this point, I would recommend some serious suspension of disbelief while Carol Hannah, Althea, and Irina all send their models clippity-clopping down the runway and pretend like they’ve made professional-quality collections.

Ladies, I’d like to be the first to inform you of what I’d call a deal. It’s this Valentino Green Satin Bow Front Clutch, which is quite a steal at only $396. “That’s not a steal!,” you say. Ah, but it is, especially when you consider the whopping price tag of $895 on this Valentino Satin Bow Front Clutch.

Sure, the more expensive version is a lighter, brighter satin and involves a decidedly more rigid and complex, but I actually prefer this darker version. First of all, let’s chat about the color. I believe that the color of a bag is a main component of its foundation, and this color certainly passes. The dark, forest green is the perfect shade for the remaining weeks of autumn and will certainly carry you through the winter, spring and summer- believe me when I say this color is striking against a white prairie dress.

Despite my wariness when it comes to the winter season and the cold that accompanies it, I love bags that emulate a good old down filled puffer. Remember when Moncler collaborated with Fendi to make those sensationally shiny ‘ski jacket’ Spy bags? That I adored and lusted after, but this cutesy Marc by Marc Jacobs Mabel Puffed Tote delivers all the style without a price that makes your eyes open wide.

I’m not really one to sit and ruminate on a bag. When I see a new one, I either have something to say about it or I don’t, and if I do, it normally gets written about it shortly thereafter. Forming an opinion has never been difficult for me.

But when I saw the Michael Kors Roslyn Leather Shoulder Bag, I found myself experiencing a confusing, unfamiliar mix of feelings – I like the bag, but there’s something not quite right, and I’m having a difficult time putting my finger on it. Let’s discuss this bag’s details, shall we? After all, that’s usually where the devil is.

Why hasn’t anyone made this bag before? Did someone do it and I just missed it? Because the Dautore Leather Lattice Tote is a strong design idea, and I can’t believe that there aren’t a great deal of similarly styled bags on the market right now.

And is anyone else looking at this and seeing shades of Project Runway, Season 5, during which Suede made the latticed dress for the Natalie Portman/”green” fabric challenge? Or am I the only one that lets reality shows take up that much of her brain space?

Let's be best friends.
