Have You Ever Rebought a Bag You’ve Sold?

The newest Saint Laurent Sac de Jour has me thinking about it!

It’s hard to believe that 2018 was eight years ago. It feels like just yesterday that I was living uptown and still in my twenties—yet here I am, now equidistant from my twenties and forties.

I’ve never shied away from sharing my age. In fact, I often forget it, because age itself doesn’t mean much to me. What does matter is what it represents: time. Acknowledging that I’m 35 means realizing that I’ve been living on my own for nearly a decade.

Time, Style, and Growing Into Yourself

In that time, I’ve built a life in the city—new friendships, meaningful professional relationships, and a career I’m both proud of and deeply invested in. I’ve changed in ways both profound and superficial, including my tastes and personal style.

Some of what I wore in 2018 makes me cringe now, and my bag choices were no exception. That year, I bought my first bag that cost more than my rent: a red croc Nano Sac de Jour. I loved it and wore it constantly for years—until one day, I realized I wasn’t reaching for it anymore.

A More Grown-Up Sac de Jour?

The bag no longer brought me joy or felt aligned with my style. Letting it go made me sad, not because I missed that exact bag, but because it symbolized a different chapter of my life. Thinking about it now brings up two feelings: nostalgia for who I was then, and a quiet longing for another Sac de Jour—one slightly larger, less structured, and in a color that reflects how my style has matured.

When I sold it, I still loved the Sac de Jour; the details just no longer suited my life. Now, years later, I find myself tempted again. Saint Laurent’s latest iterations are calling to me.

Yes. More than once, I hate to admit. Most recent: the LV Sonatine I bought eons ago, sold because I thought it was a “starter” bag, and saw it again in a vintage shop last year and realized its the perfect grab-and-go for my current style. I’m wiser now.

I rebought my LV Métis three times. My Lanvin happy twice, my Gucci horse bit saddle bag twice, my Celine vintage box three times, my Chanel crave flap twice, my Lady Dior medium bag twice, and a copper Bottega twice as well…. Only the Lady Dior, LV Métis, and the Celine box survived to this day after all this back and forth.

when i was in college in another city i asked my aunt to sell some of my lacoste bags i had multiple colors and i wanted to upgrade already to a gucci bag so i gave her a list of colors i am letting go of and she grabbed 1 wrong color (pastel blue which is one of my favorite shades) i panicked when i found out and luckily my mom checked the store and it was still in stock so she bought me another…was just able to use it 3x so
15yrs later i sold it to contribute to my birkin fund
so far ive already sold more than 20 bags since the pandemic and have no regrets (knock on wood!)

I’ve never rebought a bag that I’ve sold or given away. The only bag that I would consider rebuying is a terry cloth Juicy Couture bag for nostalgia’s sake. It was a perfect mom bag.

Once I get rid of a bag, I’m done and have moved forward. No regrets.

Really had to talk myself out of rebuying a Gucci soho disco. It was a great bag, but discontinued when I sold it, and didn’t want to pay that price for a preloved version that probably wouldn’t be anywhere near as good of condition as mine was (mine was pristine!). I settled for replacing it with a preloved Celine nano luggage, just before the new collection came out with the reissue. Talk about timing!
