The Gucci New Bamboo Crocodile Shoulder Bag, $14,200 via Net-a-Porter

It’s easy to become price-blind when you spend your days hunting down and discussing designer accessories, but sometimes life has a way of reminding you just how much a dollar is actually worth. I experienced that recently when trying to buy my first set of post-college, post-Ikea Big Girl furniture and found that I could decorate my bedroom rather elaborately for the same amount of money that I’ve been contemplating spending on a crocodile-embossed Celine Phantom Luggage Tote this fall.

For real croc, like the Gucci New Bamboo Crocodile Shoulder Bag? I could probably do a whole one-bedroom apartment, including a nice TV. At fifteen inches wide, this is a generously sized bag for the sort of structure it employs, but $14,000 means something different for me now than it did last week. Would you ever pay that much for a bag? Are you interested in crocodile at all? Buy through Net-a-Porter for $14,200.

I love croc whether it’s embossed leather or the real thing. That Gucci bag is stunning but I could never spend that kind of money on a handbag. There’s too much real life going on here and not enough DISPOSABLE income. I am not complaining-it’s just not part of my reality and I can live with that. I do enjoy looking at it though! 🙂

Dear Amanda, welcome to the real world; please do not stay there for too long … your comment about the worth of the Celine bag is exactly what my husband would say. Bless him … innocence is bliss

This bag is stunning! It is one of the few exotics that I REALLY like, the combination with the colour and the bamboo are amazing, but that amount of money could pay off my student loans, my car and then some….really puts it all in perspective! 🙂

This is a beautiful bag and I love croc!!! I bought a Prada croc satchel a couple years ago at about 60% off. It is similar to the color of this Gucci and I love it. I will treasure the bag for many years to come.

Now that is a truly subtle bag. If I had unending wealth I’d buy it in a heartbeat.

At first, I thought it was a Coach. Don’t know why that came to mind. I am not a fan of crocodile-real or embossed-so this bag wouldn’t appeal to me anyway.
I have been really wanting a Range Rover (used of course), and this would help me with a down payment. Maybe I could even buy a basic Hermes Birkin with the left over money.
All I can say is, wow.

This bag is just beautiful. I don’t know something about it is having such a calming affect on me. But I don’t think I will spend $14k+ for any handbag (she is not in my league).

Pretty bag, but it’s not worth $14K. No, seriously, it literally is not worth $14K. Exotic skins, however exotic they are, have a set range of prices on them and they’re fixed in that way no matter who the maker is. And labor in Italy (I’m assuming these are made in Italy) is NOT that expensive. This bag doesn’t even cost half the retail price to make, not even close! If I see someone carry this bag and know that they had paid retail for it, I actually would think less of them – not a smart spender imho:)

It’s nice, but not 14K nice. Allow me to digress…bag lovers would enjoy the book “Bringing Home the Birkin”, published over five years ago. It discusses croc bags along with all other things Hermes. Great read, and you get a real croc education. Reminds me of my visit to the Hermes HQ in Paris where I saw a 250K red patent croc birkin with a diamond clasp. Oh to dream! Now that was a croc bag!

Digression aside, I like croc, but I could leave this one.

The bag is lovely….but there are plenty of lovely bags in the $2000.00 to $3000.00 range. I love nice things…but a certain amount of reason comes into play…prevents me from spending 14K on a bag.
