If there’s one song that now feels absolutely, wholly, completely, almost maddeningly inescapable, it’s Tyla’s Chanel.
On the surface, it’s a rather simple premise: “How you say you love me, if you ain’t put me in Chanel?” sings the South African pop-star in her signature, sumptuous R&B-esque vocals. Turn to TikTok, and Katseye vocalist Jeong Yoonchae is bumping it out to the bop there. Over on Instagram, you’d be hard-pressed to find a single GRWM that isn’t set to the tune of the track. On YouTube, the MV has over 107 million views… and counting!
But decked out in “head to toe vintage Chanel,” and clutching rare resale treats like the Fall/Winter 1993 golden revolver (plus holster) or that legendary Lagerfeld-era Spring/Summer 2013 Hula Hoop bag, Tyla has a much deeper point to make with Chanel. “The song,” she tells Vogue, “is not only about spoiling me, it’s about being treated like luxury. Being the gift!” Forget the ring, get me some Chanel!
As it turns out, Tyla’s track made sure the label hung around just long enough in the zeitgeist until Mathieu Blazy’s Chanel hit the stores earlier this month.
“All the fabbest fashion girls I know are losing their ever-loving minds trying to cop some CC. It feels like grainy footage from Best Buy in the ’90s when flat-screen TVs first dropped on Black Friday,” wrote Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, “I keep imagining Matthieu Blazy standing at the top of the stairs at Rue Cambon — arms crossed, full Regina George energy — watching the pandemonium he has unleashed on us mere mortals.”
“Shoppers Gone Feral” headlined the New York Times, “Customers withstood gate-keeping, bomb threats and heartbreakingly low inventory as a new era of Chanel hit stores during Paris Fashion Week.” Another customer – queueing for hours in her Jimmy Choo stilettos outside the 57th Street boutique in New York quipped, “I’m not going to die here. That would be so unfashionable.”
Indeed, for generations of shoppers, Chanel has been the epitome of fashion. Now, creative director Matthieu Blazy has made it very, very desirable, all over again. And front and center to this Chanel-enaissance? Yep, the Classic Flap!

History: the Flap Phenomenon
Sigmund Freud once famously said that the purse was a receptacle of female mystery – a woman who went out into society carrying one was clutching her womb, so to speak. In Paris Fashion Week this year, however, there was no mystery as to the purse of the moment. The question on everyone’s lips?
“Which Chanel bag did you buy?”
Because when Matthieu Blazy’s debut Spring/Summer 2026 collection officially landed in Paris on March 5th, editors, celebrities, and VICs flocked to the boutique in droves to get their hands on the newest piece of investment-bag real estate. WhatsApp groups were formed, personal shoppers enlisted, and transatlantic flights booked. It was full-blown fashion hysteria.
And fashion insiders are no strangers to the story of the Chanel Flap.
The original 2.55, born February 1955, gave Freud’s secret female superpower a new, empowered makeover – swathed in sumptuous quilted leather, secured with the minimalist Mademoiselle lock, and carried via a chain strap.
It was freedom dressed up in fashion! Then Karl Lagerfeld arrived in the ’80s, adding the signature interlocking CC turn-lock (he famously declared, “logos are the Esperanto of marketing, luxury, and business today”) and creating the Classic Flap as we know it, often dubbed 11.12 after its original style code, A01112.
Clearly, if the 2.55 walks, the 11.12 struts – and strut it has, in every form imaginable! There was the outrageously oversized XXL Airline Flap from Spring/Summer 2018 playful vinyl “Coco Splash” editions, and endless tweed, velvet, metallic, and embroidered experiments that turned the bag into a canvas for expression.
Perfect for, shall we say, a blazing new reinvention?
The New Era: Off to a Blazing Start
Bryan Yambao – better known as Bryanboy in the fashion circuits, and himself a loyal Chanel customer of over 15 years – was invited to shop with other V.I.C.s at the brand’s Rue Cambon store a day before the collection’s official in-store opening.
Going in, he’d expected to land Blazy’s new soft black Maxi Flap. What he found instead was, well, the retail-equivalent of the Hunger Games splayed out across the flagship’s 8,600 square footage.
“There were so many people just hanging out and trying things on in the middle of the boutique,” Yambao recollects, horrified, “It was chaos.” And the bag of his dreams? “Display only, it’s not available, check back in 3 months.”
As the OG fashion-blogger then got busy activating his V.I.C. connections (and ultimately landing the Maxi Flap in beige… plus a small mountain of jackets, shoes, and bags, as one does), over on Avenue Montaigne, Milan Rubin, an NY modeling agent, was facing her own version of fashion Survivor.

“I like more understated things, so Chanel never really resonated with me,” she said. And yet here she was, on her third trip to a Chanel store in Paris since the collection had dropped, trying out an east-west burgundy bag with a top-handle, leather toggles at the sides, and of course, the tell-tale flap closure with gold double-C turn-lock hardware (6,200 euros, or $7,187). Just as she was about to check out, a bomb threat forced everyone to evacuate the store!
Ms. Rubin returned the next day to complete her purchase.
You see, such is the desire for Blazy’s designs. “Chanel is a paradox. Chanel is function, Chanel is fiction. Chanel is sensible, Chanel is seductive. Chanel is day, Chanel is night,” he writes in the Fall/Winter 2026 show notes. “It represents the freedom to choose between the caterpillar and the butterfly whenever you want.” It’s this exact energy he infuses into the Chanel Flap – gilded in gold and leather, then crushed and battered and left open for Spring/Summer 2026, redesigned in gauzy and transparent mousseline, filled with sheer embroidered love notes poking out the top, or blown up into the maxi flap bag in grained calfskin – or the large Shopping Bag made to be “used, thrown around and scuffed (and for the price tag, you’d want to be using it every day)” writes WWD.
The flap has now become a house code on its own, even when stripped of all ostentation (like the signature quilting), still unmistakably Chanel.
Chanel Flap: Materials, Patterns & Hardware
While it is the silhouette that defines the Chanel Flap, what makes it distinctive (not to mention supremely covetable) is what it’s made of.
Caviar leather remains the benchmark – grained, durable, and resistant to scratches – perfect for everyday wear. Lambskin is soft and oh-so-luxurious, though it shows wear more readily. Crinkled calfskin, seen mostly on the Reissue, gives that perfectly “lived-in” texture, while patent leather shines like it’s ready for the runway (just keep your fingerprints in check!).
What of Blazy’s new takes?
Plain, grained leathers, suede, and minimalist “pure” finishes – purses that let the leather do all the talking. And while the use of exotic skins has been discontinued since 2018 (making them ultra-collectible), Blazy has introduced croc-embossed pieces too for those who love that look!

Quilting and patterns, on the other hand, are what give the flap character: diamond quilting is classic, chevron brings a modern edge, and embossed camellias nod to Coco Chanel’s signature motifs. Perforated, iridescent, or transparent treatments add playful twists in Blazy’s recent designs.
And finally, it is the hardware that completes the look. CC turn-locks and chains come in gold (the brand notably switched from 24k gold to gold-plated in 2008), silver, ruthenium, So-Black, and iridescent finishes.

Chain straps range from the classic leather-woven links to the structured chain of the Reissue and the wider Bijoux chain, offering versatility for shoulder or crossbody wear. At the end of the day, every aspect of the Chanel Flap’s design is deliberate, making the experience of wearing one all the more luxurious.
Snafu with Sizing? Fear Not!
Now, the Chanel Flap sizing can be a rabbit hole in its own, capable of baffling even the most seasoned of Chanel shoppers. The classics run from the tiny Square and Rectangular Minis, through Small, Medium, Jumbo, and scale up to the iconic Maxi.
Minis usually sport a single flap, while the classic double-flap construction kicks in at the Small and continues through to the Maxi — complete with the burgundy leather interior, zip pocket, slip pockets, and the cheeky “Mona Lisa Smile” back pocket for quick-access essentials.
And this season, Blazy’s offerings make things even more interesting, or, erm, confusing. The new soft Maxi Flap Bags in grained calfskin with silver-tone hardware, along with the redesigned Flap Bag in lambskin, are bigger, bolder, and perfect for carrying everything from laptops to love notes — or just making a statement. Add in the Shopper and Bowler silhouettes, and you’re spoilt for choice and utterly bewildered.
Fear not, we try to break through the clutter here!
As for prices? Well, of course, they match the frenzy. While price-increases within the Chanel ecosystem often garner separate analyses on their own, the Instagram @y2kbags clocked a staggering 5,036% price increase on the medium 11.12 since its inception in 1955 (when it used to retail for $220!) – the good news is that Blazy’s new offerings retail for less than the classics.
Whether you keep it for yourself, pass it down, or resell, a Chanel flap pays back in style points… and then some. After all, you’re not just buying leather and hardware — you’re buying a little piece of fashion history.

The Celebrities in New Chanel
Blazy’s reimagined Chanel Flaps, though it only barely hit stores, has already emerged as the strongest contender for an It-bag in the making. Karefa-Johnson goes on to call it “the most-coveted Chanel collection in recent memory.”
Gab Waller, luxury fashion sourcing specialist, says, “The Small Flap Bag will absolutely take the lead as the most requested bag for S/S26,” with black and white dominating the demand. Fueled by social media and a slew of It-girl fans like Hailey Bieber, Margot Robbie, Dua Lipa, model Vittoria Ceretti, and Jennie, sourcing requests now come in daily.
But the designer’s designs have garnered attention from a whole new demographic for the label – the Chanel boys!
Harry Styles, for instance, scooped up a pony-hair leopard-print Chanel Maxi Flap straight from Matthieu Blazy’s Métiers d’Art show in New York, pairing it effortlessly with a very stealth wealth, Carolyn-Bessette-adjacent ensemble of navy crewneck, jeans, and penny loafers – proof that a statement bag can elevate even the simplest look. Jacob Elordi (previously seen in possession of a mini Flap) recently joined the ranks of the Chanel men in a checkered, cropped Chanel jacket on the Wuthering Heights press tour.
Ultimately, the Chanel Flap remains an untouchable icon, one of the touchstones formative to a luxury experience, price increases and availability notwithstanding. But what Blazy has managed to do – not entirely unlike his celebrated predecessor, Karl Lagerfeld – is make the brand’s timeless style feel thrillingly fresh. Which, of course, has us all very, very excited.
As Tyla so rightly demands: say you love me? Put me in some (Matthieu Blazy) Chanel!

Tired. Tired. Tired. The Chanel flap bag is difficult to access and more difficult to fasten on the go, given you have to lift up the outer flap and try to peer around it. The double flap is HEAVY on the shoulders after lugging it around all day. The interior pockets are nearly impossible to access unless you can set the bag down on a stable surface or your knees. They make you look like a ready-made pick-pocket/purse-snatching target, especially when clueless young people wear them slung over their back shoulders. I’ve had (and still do) more than my share of various iterations of Chanel bags over the decades, and too many designs and fabrications do not work well or withstand everyday usage, despite the incessant rallying cry around them. The older bags — pre-~2010 — were beautifully made. Now, not so much. Not worth the money any longer. I save the vintage ones for an occasional evening out. Otherwise, they stare at the inside of my closets.
May I say that the desirability of a Chanel Classic double flap has never wavered. I am certainly glad I purchased when I did, the price increases are insane. I purchased a rectangle mini only 3 years ago and it has already increased from $4900.00! My Jumbo, ha, was $5500.00 when I bought it. The Classics are always desirable and that includes the WOC. There is a flap that Blazey designed that I like, maybe, if it sticks around and becomes a staple.
You wrote that Chanel switched from gold to gold-plated. The bags never used solid gold. The brand switched from gold-plated to using cheap metals in 2008.
In 2020 I purchased my first and only Chanel – lambskin Maxi single flap in metallic grey (Gris Fonce) with ruthenium hardware – $3K. It still looks brand new. Best purchase ever.
Your guide was wonderfully detailed and is a must read for anyone interested in handbags. I printed it out and am keeping a copy in my The Book Of Iconic Bags from Fashionphile.
Evolution from the 2.55 to the 11.12 and tied it into today’s Blazy-era chaos. Coco Chanel definitely built something that keeps reinventing itself without losing its power. It makes the whole ‘put me in Chanel’ moment by Tyla feel less like hype and more like legacy.
I do Love love the large maxi type of bag from Chanel, especially that Large Shopping bag.
I like Chanel, not loving these.
I have just one Flap, the Jumbo from Métiers 2013, in brown glazed caviar – which is pretty indestructible, – none of the new versions call to me.
Sajid, thank you for another great article! (please note the correction below about gold-plated (not solid) hardware vs later metal).
Is that… Ashley Olsen with a Chanel?
