Chanel is constantly churning out new bags, many of them being new takes on classic bags for the house. The Chanel Boy Bag quickly turned into a staple for the brand, with many opting for a version of the Boy Bag over the Classic Flap (I know I am more of a Boy Bag lover than Flap at the moment). While there is rendition after rendition, sometimes a specific version stands out.
While I thought this bag was introduced for Chanel’s Metiers d’Art Paris in Rome 2016 collection, the Chanel Boy Bag with Handle grabbed everyone’s attention a year ago from Chanel’s Metiers d’Art 2015 Paris-Salzburg collection. The Boy Bag has always had a a chain shoulder strap, that can be doubled to make the bag shorter if you choose, but I wanted to take a closer look at the top handle addition. I love the inclusion of the handle, it gives this bag a sophisticated touch but remains super cool and casual at the same time. I’ve also been told the Boy Bag with Handle’s shoulder strap is 6 inches longer which gives you the ability to truly wear this bag crossbody, which many wish their Boy Bag would allow as well.
I reached out to Chanel to see if the Boy Bag with Handle would be made a permanent part of the collection and were told that they do not have further information at this time if this bag will be offered in future collections. If you love this bag, it was bought in 3 sizes and currently available at Chanel boutiques worldwide.

It looks very busy with the addition of the top handle. A bit heavy and clunky too. I’ve always thought that even the most basic unadorned Boy Bag leaned towards being ornate, and the top-handled newcomer looks like it has a lot going on. But I do think a bag like this photographs better when held by a top handle, and it’ll be interesting to see how Chanel adorns the new real estate.
I agree it does look kind of busy, as you said, with the top handle — in the small size. IMO, the balance would be better in a larger size.
Ya, I’d love to see a sample and be able to photograph it and see how that looks versus the original Boy design.
Two of my boy. It just give you another feeling. With the handle, it gives you more strong women look, elegant and more way to carry it. I am so happy i bought it.
Not loving the top handle, which seems too busy for a small bag, but I prefer my bags to be either hand-carry or shoulder/crossbody rather than a hybrid. Would probably look better carried with the strap hanging down but I still prefer the original design.

Chanel already did the top handle Boy for their Me?tiers d’Art Paris-Salzburg 2015 Collection. I own one and it’s very practical. I love the look of carrying with top handle with chains dangling.

I’ve seen a number of Youtubers with this bag from a year ago. This design isn’t new. Off the top of my head, LisaLisaD1 had one with gold hardware.

I like the handle but I especially appreciate the corresponding chain detailing on the edge of the front flap that matches the chain embellishment on the handle.
It makes it look “tough”. (Well, as tough as a Chanel® bag can look, I guess!) I’m a man and this new, be-handled Boy Bag is almost masculine enough that I could carry it without too many sideways glances!
The chain is longer on the top handle boy bag by about 6″ (I have 3 – black, blue and camel). I am taller and the old medium boy chain is too short for me to wear crossbody. So, I love this style because it works for my height! Also, when you are reaching to grab your bag quickly – in your car, off the floor, off a desk, etc, the top handle is a nice touch.

I’m in the minority here. I think it should have only one type of handle. If you carry it with the chain fully extended, the chain pushes against the top handle. I really like the extra detailing but remove the chain and just keep it a top handle (or attach the chain to the sides of the top with rings so it doesn’t loop around).
i put the chain on the inside of the bag so I still use it but its like a chanel classic flap where the chain is inside holding the bag up.
I really like it but the ones shown here all seem to be in the small size. Is this version available in medium? If yes, do you have the prices for that? Esp the first photo. Although I love the red python version as well — if that’s available in medium too, would be very interested in the price.
I got the black one in the first picture, was 5300, which is the “old medium” size they have a larger “new medium” size for 5800. the red python starts at 7500 for the old medium.

I think the bag is beautiful, saw it in the boutique. I went with a Jumbo Classic flap but this is a nice bag. This is just a little too much hardware for me, but still really nice. My husband lobbied for this bag as he really liked it.
It looks like it weighs a ton. I wonder if that is true? I don’t like it, i like the clean lines with the chain only version.

It’s soooo heavy. I think it’s beautiful but picked it up in the boutique and was like “no thanks”. It’s mostly from the chain detail so they could theoretically make more versions that are lighter.
I have always been a classic flap girl-at-heart, and always will be. I simply cannot wrap my head around the Boy Bag, the fabric interior, the price (that in some cases exceeds well beyond the price of a classic flap)…and yet the customer who purchases a Boy Bag continues to be denied the “magic” of that magnetic box, soft-white dustbag, extra booklet, black-almost-“origami” shaped tissue wrapping. IMHO, the disproportionate-size handle adds even “more” to a handbag that already is crying out for “less”.
I love this bag. My wallet was closed to the regular boy bag but this version is absolutely beautiful to me.
I’m going to have to check it out at the store!
This bag is more of a casual fun quirky bag (i see younger girls or models carrying it, not an UESider per say) – i do not see it as a classic bag
