And the Pantone Color of the Year for 2022 is…

Introducing Very Peri, the color said to represent all of the new year

Every year in December, color cataloging service Pantone picks a shade from its expansive archive that it thinks will best represent the overall mood and aesthetic of the upcoming year. However, this year, Pantone decided to do things a little differently, creating a brand new color, said to display a high-spirited, joyous mood while fostering courageous creativity and imaginative expression. The Pantone Color of the Year selection process is a thoughtful one that analyzes trends across industries like film, entertainment, art, fashion, travel, and more. This year, Pantone landed on its new shade, Very Peri, which is a purple hue that encompasses qualities of blues and also possesses a violet-red undertone.

Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, described the combination as a reflection of what is taking place culturally around the globe, stating” “Creating a new color for the first time in the history of our Pantone Color of the Year educational color program reflects the global innovation and transformation taking place.” Eiseman went on to explain how society continues to recognize color as a unique form of communication and a way to express ideas and emotions. And if that’s true, Very Peri highlights the many possibilities that lay in the year ahead as we emerge from an intense period of isolation.

A press release from Pantone described how our physical and digital lives have converged in new ways, stretching the limits of our realities all the while. Very Peri expresses the fusion of our physical life with the digital world, opening the door to a dynamic virtual world that explores and creates new color possibilities. Light shades of purple like lilac and lavender were already trending this year, and this newly-made hue proves that they are here to stay.
