Hi Megs and Vlad!

I am a tPFer and I love love love love your website. I am searching for my next purse and I have long been in love with the Celine Luggage Tote. I do, however, tend to stick with buying bags that retain their value. Do you think the Luggage Tote has staying power? Will it retain some kind of value or will it be another sad Chloe Paddington case?

Jesse – Thanks for being a longtime PurseForum member and fan of our site! We love to hear from our readers and I love being asked for advice. You brought up a question that is on many accessory lovers’ minds: Do popular bags still retain their value, or will the craze die down, and with it, the allure of the bag.

Let’s go back to the Chloe Paddington, a bag that was one of the items that sparked the It Bag mania and had people crossing country lines trying to find a Paddington to pick up (for example, ahem, yours truly). The Paddington was different when it came out, the design stood out because of the extra thick leather, the accents, and most notably the extremely heavy lock. This bag was heavy to carry, truly too heavy, but everyone wanted to have it and it was hard to get your hands on.

But the time of the Paddington was during an interesting time in the accessory world, when It Bags reigned supreme and the more ornate and over-designed the bag, the more likely it was to garner premium status. The Paddington was all the rage for about three seasons, but when it went out of style, it really went out of style. Personally, I still love the aesthetic, but this bag reached critical mass and everyone moved on.

Fast forward to the Celine Luggage Tote, a bag that currently has purse-enthusiasts going gaga. This bag has been huge for over two full years now, though, and while it isn’t quite as hard to track down as it was in the beginning, finding the exact rendition of the Luggage Tote that you want can still be quite a feat. What is most important to note about this bag is that it’s more classic than the Paddington. Sure, the design stands out and some even say it looks like a face, but the finished product is extremely classic because of the clean lines, sleek design, and premium quality. Ladylike bags will always have a place in the accessory world, and this Celine bag is both ladylike and feminine while remaining usable and chic.

I can’t tell you that the bag will retain its value. While Luggage Totes can still be resold for close to their original retail, it’s hard to say any designer bag will retain its value over the long haul, aside from Hermes and Chanel. What I can tell you is the bag is beautiful. I own three of these bags and even with more people buying and carrying it (did you see our feature on all the celebs with Celine Luggage Totes?), the bag has not lost its luster. It may be over-carried, but the design is beautiful enough to deserve the attention it is getting.

  • I think that one of the major reasons why Chloé Paddington lost its spark is because of the different creative directors that Chloé went through over the years. Paddington was launched when Chloé was under Phoebe Philo, and it became the It Bag until around 2006-07. After that Chloé went through different creative directions within short period of time: Paulo Melim Andersson, Hannah MacGibbon, and now Clare Waight Keller. I guess during this period, in addition to the fact that each person has its own style and touch, Chloé’s identity and soul kind of lost its direction (although I think that Clare Waight Keller has been doing a good job so far in reviving the brand).

    With that said, as long as Phoebe Philo is leading Céline, I believe that key accessories items like Luggage, Trapeze, and Classic box will never go out of style. She has proven that she is capable of implanting a brand’s identity throughout different collections. If Ms. Philo leaves Céline in the future, it will depend on LVMH’s ability in choosing her replacement. In short, you can never predict the future of a brand, just like you can never time a stock market. So I would like to advise Jesse to make her buying decision based on:
    1. Whether you like them or not
    2. Function & Form of the bag

    I love my red Paddie–it is my go to bag for December (that and a red way-too-long-but-I- got-it-cheap at TJ Maxx cashmere scarf)–very cheery and Holiday-ish. Yes, it is way too heavy but I love it.
    I just don’t care for the Celine bags but I can recognize they may become a classic also (the flappy sides just don’t work for me). I hope they are made well and don’t have quality issues so many bags develop quickly after becoming popular.

    I am interested in finding out more information about the Celine Trapeze. I love – love – love it… I want to know how long the purse has been around? Is it durable? Lately, I’ve been finding my Balenciaga bags falling apart on me. :( That said — I still love my Balenciaga bags!

    couldn’t have agreed more. i can see these being put out in stands more frequently now…but haven’t found the right color combo of my taste. always reading purseblog for the 411 on the newest collections so hopefully then i can find my right luggage~ unless i want to quite being too picky!

    Thank you Megs for finally addressing the 64 million question that has plagued every bag addict’s mind for some time now. I think the difference between Celine and the Paddington is at that time, it was the Paddington that was the IT bag, whereas now, it is Celine that is the IT brand right now. Everyone is gushing over the brand itself and not just a particular bag–from the luggage to the trapeze to the phantom to the box, the trio, even all the RTW. Celine has been there for so many years but its classic lines and very subtle branding has appealed to the classic woman the way LV’s monograms, Chanel’s quilts and turn locks, and Hermes’ leather and craftsmanship have. Although no brand can ever compete with Hermes’ craftsmanship and Chanel’s consistency, the subtle beauty of Celine makes the brand a classic on itself. With the right marketing strategy (i.e. making the brand accessible only to those who work hard for it and never going on sale to retain its value), it may still be around and covetable when our grandchildren start on their luxury collection.

    I disagree. There flap sides and “face” really date this bag to a certain era in fashion. I think the bag will be remembered as significant to this fashion time period, but it’s going to lose its resale value quickly in the next couple of years. There’s always been something very 80s about the design style. The thick, curving seams on the front and the handle attachments are very defined to a particular style. I do wish that Celine would re-release the clasp bags because I think those will be more relevant in the coming years. Fashion is finally starting to leave behind the platform pumps and bodycon dresses. Minimalism is going to reign again!
