Cleobella takes a slightly more artful look at sequins

Just yesterday, I wondered if maybe a sequin-covered Alice + Olivia hobo was a little too much shine for any one person to pull off. As it turns out, the problem wasn’t the number of sequins – it was the details of the design. Or, more accurately, that it had none.

When I saw the Cleobella Sophia Hobo today, the shortcomings of the Alice + Olivia bag became clear. A whole mess of sequins is perfectly fine, just as long as they’re applied artfully and intelligently. Unfortunately, Alice + Olivia merely covered their entire bag. The order and intricacy of those scallop-patterned Cleobella hobo are what make it appealing, even in the face of a metric ton of paillettes.

Fendi adds some whimsy to its iconic zucca logo

Perhaps I’m merely willing to indulge Fendi’s recent logo-bag silliness because of the beautiful runway collections the brand has given us over the past few seasons, but first I liked Fendi‘s slightly bizarre horse-head tote, and now I find myself enjoying the flowered-but-not-frilly Fendi Roll Bag Tote.

I think the more likely explanation is that these recent bags show a brand that’s not taking itself too seriously, which is always worthy of applause. The double-dipped logo patterns of this tote could easily read gaudy and dated, but the somewhat delicate way in which they’re combined creates an oddly pleasant visual dissonance for which I’m willing to set aside my general distaste for logo bags.

Put on your sunglasses before you look at this Alice + Olivia hobo

Ladies and gentlemen, I’m a certifiable fan of sequins, glitter and sparkles of all kinds, but the Alice + Olivia Sequin Hobo is a LOT of sequins. It really and truly earned its name, and it might need to come with some sort of eye protection warning.

Be that as it may, I still find myself oddly drawn to it. I probably wouldn’t like it in person because I don’t like bags that large that have such long, thin straps, but a bunch of olive-khaki sequins is certainly something that you could add to almost any ensemble in order to attract a little more attention to your sartorial choices. One word of advice: keep this and any bag like it far, far away from delicate knits or you might have a rather unsightly snag.

Yves Saint Laurent bowls me over with Vanity Bowler

To paraphrase a cheesy old pickup line, do you believe in love at first sight, or does the Yves Saint Laurent Vanity Bowler need to walk by again?

For me, the bag had to walk by a second time, but after a that I had no more doubts. The shape is unexpected, the color is a touch lighter than the military trend generally dictates and the bag looks just different enough to make it stand out without all of that needy attention-seeking that tends to come from accessory designers with less finesse than the fine folks at Yves Saint Laurent.

Mulberry goes for simple luxury with python Bayswater

It’s so easy to get caught up in trends, gimmicks and the Next Big Thing when you follow fashion. The industry moves through ideas at a pace that can be both exhausting and exhilarating, and sometimes you lose sight of the beauty of basic things.

The Mulberry Python Bayswater Bag is not “basic” in a literal sense, but the design’s simple, familiar lines go a long way toward streamlining an outfit. They also make the color variation in the beautiful gold python skin absolutely sing, which elevates this bag far above your average metallic without unnecessary complication or fussiness.

Jerome Dreyfuss spices up a black minibag with luxurious python

We’ve been writing about the rise of the minibag for well over a year and a half now, and at this point, I think it’s safe to say that these little bags aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, and for good reason. They provide a more modern alternative to a traditional clutch, and they’re often much more convenient to carry for long periods of time because of their long straps.

At this point, almost everyone who likes the trend already has a black minibag in their closets or has their sights on a candidate, but what if you’re looking for something to set your bag apart? An exotic is always a smart way to go if you want to make heads turn, and the Jerome Dreyfuss Twee Mini Python Bag lets you do that without cracking the four-figure price bracket.

Melody’s Rocco

Spotted at the Chipotle on Park and 31st. The lovely Melody with her Alexander Wang Rocco Duffle. She mentioned she loves the bag, but at times finds it heavy. She prefers to hold it in the crook of her arm instead of utilizing the shoulder strap. Buy Alexander Wang via ShopBop.

Amanda asked and Abaco delivers… Gunmetal

Back in September, Amanda covered the Abaco Jamily Metallic Python Crossbody bag. The only thing she said could lead her to loving this bag more was if it were finished in gunmetal. LOOK AMANDA! They did it. Just for you. Amanda asks, and Abaco answers.

Right now I am finding myself in a bag lull. The ladylike minimalistic bags are great, but it is a little dull to continuously cover. In all reality, this bag stopped me quickly when doing my usual perusing of online shops. I am on the biggest crossbody kick right now, finding it so entirely helpful when walking around the City to have both hands free. And the design of the Abaco Jamily Metallic Python Crossbody Bag is something both Amanda and I love. It is a mixture of practical and hip.

Cynthia Vincent goes for silly sparkle in a mini crossbody

Admittedly we’ve only discussed two Fall 2010 bags from Twelfth St. by Cynthia Vincent so far, but it already looks as though the line has made vast improvements over its inaugural handbag efforts from Spring 2010.

The Twelfth St. by Cynthia Vincent Cosmo Pouch in particular seems like good, girly fun. The look reminds me a bit of the Leah and Bliss bedazzled “Birkins” that we covered on PurseBlog earlier this year, but the relatively similar size, shape and color of all the stuck-on stones gives it a bit more of a refined edge.
