Chanel’s Outstanding Pieces are just that – outstanding

Even if you don’t count yourself among Chanel‘s fans, you have to admit that there are a few things Karl & Co. do very well. Chiefly among them are the gorgeously detailed and often-exotic flap bags that the company releases every season in its Outstanding Pieces capsule collection, which is exactly what it sounds like – the best of the best from one of the world’s biggest handbag brands. Close-up pictures of all four of Fall 2010’s outstanding bags, which use alligator, stingray and python skins, after the jump.

Rebecca Minkoff gives us a fun spin on the Baby Stam

Does anyone else remember the Marc Jacobs Baby Stam? It’s was a small, shoulder-carried version of Jacobs’ iconic Stam satchel, made up of a quilted kisslock pouch and the Stam’s signature giant gold chain as a shoulder strap. I always wanted one as a companion piece to my larger black Stam, and I never managed to get my hands on one at a decent price.

If you also took a shine to the Baby Stam and wish that you had one somewhere in your closet, consider the Rebecca Minkoff Kiss Bag. The feel is very similar, but the price is far more palatable than a Baby Stam in the bag’s heyday.

Reed Krakoff alligator tote back in stock at Net-a-Porter

When we discussed Reed Krakoff’s Fall 2010 handbag line last week, many of you mentioned that your favorite was one we had omitted: the Reed Krakoff Alligator and Felt Boxer II Tote. The bag’s omission was intentional: I think it’s beautiful enough to deserve its own post.

When it first appeared on Net-a-Porter two weeks ago, it managed to sell out before I even woke up (which, admittedly, was later than a real adult should be waking up for work), but a second shipment has come in. So, you know, gather up that extra seven grand you have laying around, because this thing doesn’t come cheap.

Elie Tahari does it yet again, this time with modern ruffles

I have a theory: Elie Tahari’s bags are the bags that a Valentino lover’s younger sister would buy. They two brands are textured and rich in the same way, but the finishes are a little edgier and the prices are a lot lower with Tahari’s bags. For someone like me, that makes them nearly perfect.

The Elie Tahari Amaya Drawstring Tote is a perfect illustration of my hypothesis. Heavily ruffled bags in simple shapes are a Valentino staple, and yet I wouldn’t mistake this bag for one of theirs. This one has an edge and a little bit of grit that makes it different, and depending on who you are, that might even make it better.

In inclement weather, be prepared with Valentino

When I first saw the Valentino Primavera Water-Resistant Tote, I was really surprised. Not that the bag existed or was being marketed for rainy days – no, that made perfect sense – but that we don’t see a lot more of the exact same thing.

Chanel in particular has released a number of flap bags that come with their own rain coats in recent years, but other than a nylon tote here or there, most brands don’t take on the challenge of designing for bad weather. I live in a city that gets more inches of rain per year than Seattle, and I, for one, appreciate Valentino’s effort on behalf of those of us who experience real weather from time to time.

Chanel Fall 2010 handbags hit the internet

Remember that time when Karl Lagerfeld imported a chunk of glacier for the Chanel show in Paris and then showed a collection full of faux fur and what can only be described as yeti costumes? That seems like a long time ago, doesn’t it? Well, it was just six months ago, and now the bags from that collection are available for perusal on Chanel.com.

Some of the collection already popped up in the form of Pre-Fall 2010, but now the entirety of the line has landed and we’ve collected the pictures on your behalf. The designs range from useable, reasonable caramel-colored leather bags to wacky faux-fur-tufted creations that are only for fashion’s, uh, boldest individuals. My personal favorite is the ice cube clutch – let us know which ones you like in the comments. As always, photos are after the jump.

Switch up your regular black clutch for this one from Antik Batik

Unless you live and party in the most fashion-forward part of a very fashionable city, it’s likely that you see a lot of very similar outfits when you go out at night. Heavy reliance on little black dresses and little black clutches is a rut into which we all fall from time to time, particularly in the awkward season-changing parts of the year when we’re sick of all of our warm-weather clothes but cold-weather dressing hasn’t quite arrived yet. But don’t forget, ladies, you have options.
