In the post-pandemic world, you can be sure of at least one thing when it comes to designer bags: there will be price increases. While the exorbitant price hikes of Chanel and Hermès are the most widely reported on and discussed, the two French Houses aren’t the only brands that have drastically increased prices over the years.
While some brands cite rising costs of materials and labor plus inflation, others boast that quality, craft, and attention to detail are driving prices higher and higher. Regardless of why, bag prices continue to climb, but just by how much?
We dipped into the archives to see just how much prices have risen in the last few years, crunching the numbers on 6 popular styles from 2018 that are still in production (and fan favorites) in 2024. See how your favorite bag measures up below!
A good reminder why I’ll only buy vintage. I think these brands have lost their minds. Read an article this week about how Chinese consumers have practically stopped spending which is leading to big discounts from brands like Burberry, Versace etc. Also I have always loved Dior but have been disgusted by the slave labour revelations, I don’t think I can look at their bags the same especially as many cost as little as $50 to make.
I don’t know how much they actually cost to make but that is the allegation all over the internet. I tried to post a link to a news article but I’m not sure if this site limits third party links and fair enough if they do.
They don’t want you to post anything about Dior. They sensor everything here. If you try they’ll definitely delete it. But they’ll continue to glamorize the brand as if nothing ever happened. Which its Such a shame being that this is a disgusting practice on the brand. And they haven’t mentioned a single thing on here as if nothing ever happened.
Begs the question, why are you here if you’re so anti this purseblog and their conduct?
Wow! I agree that retailers are OTT with price increases but seems quite unlikely that a Dior bag costs only $50.00 to make.
If I remember correctly the Italian government determined the labor cost is $47 dollars. I don’t think that number includes the cloth or leather material.
Let’s open up our eyes. They we’re unfortunately using sweatshops. You tell me why this is hard to believe? These big brands are only selling you their name and people, have all fallen victim to this horrible practice. For the last few years. These forums are full of stories on how these brand are cutting corners. When making these bags. And overpricing them for no reason just to be greedy and make profits. Under paying people just to pump out bags. This is purely disgusting.
I’m willing to pay a lot of money for something if I know it’s been made with fair labor conditions, high quality, and an ethical supply chain. But when they’re charging that amount and not even hitting two out of three, I’m gonna pass really quickly.
I can’t link to the article either, but the Wall Street Journal reported that a Dior subcontractor is under investigation in Italy for gross labor violations, including taking safety features off of machinery, and paying immigrants well below minimum wage (salaries like €2-3 per hour)
With the way the factory operates, labor and materials for a cloth sewn Dior bag (cough book tote cough) is €53.
I hate that so many companies use the “but it was a subcontractor” as an excuse to pay less for labor while escaping accountability. They knew what they were getting into.
That’s the allegation https://www.businessinsider.com/dior-italy-labor-investigation-contractors-lvmh-armani-luxury-bags-2024-7?amp
Givenchy’s price increase surprised me the most, positively so.
On a design note, personally, the Loewe Puzzle Edge lost the charm of the original in what seems like an attempt to cut costs as the original requires perhaps twice the work.
Agreed. I don’t think I’ve seen one person say they prefer the edge over the OG. Really unfortunate.
I have lots of designer bags and rarely use them. I will NEVER spend over $500 for a bag going forward. I’d rather have quality time vacationing with family! I’m over the bag hype!
Prada is crazy. Aside from Chanel, they are the highest increase and have (IMO) the least luxurious bags. Saffiano leather has a purpose but it is not luxurious.
The Prada one is crazy! I love Prada, but I don’t see a 94.7% increase in quality, design or materials. That is crazy seeing that outright!
The Bottega Veneta mini loop bag when it was released in 2022 vs 2024….. 99.4% increase. I don’t think I can make myself buy this bag knowing how much it was retailed for just 2 years ago.
Can we continue this conversation…love seeing inflation on bags. You can see popularity vs craftmanship. Chanel and Givenchy. But let’s do more. Pre covid and post covid is good place to start.
Well I think I’m over it all. I just added up the cost of all my bags for insurance reasons and honestly Im sickened. Then to see all these increases for no good reason at all! Im going to start looking for understated leather bags with good quality and no brand name from now on
Do Hermes too please!
Wow, the last Chanel flap I bought was for around $1800. Now I regret letting go of some of my bags. I sold 4 of my classic flaps for around $2600 a few years ago. I only kept all my patent leathers ones (bad move).
Wow! I am glad I purchased a couple Chanel flaps years ago. I purchased a mini rectangle flap recently and crazy that I paid as much for the mini as I did for my Jumbo back in 2016.
Oh how I loved the Antigona, everyone was crazy to get their hands on one and now hardly anyone wants one…too bad, it is a great bag.
I recall the days when the Neverfull was below 1k, I purchased my Chanel at 3k. Now, it‘s just insane. I stopped buying. My last investment piece was the Bottega Veneta Teen Jodie at 2,4k. I recently re-discovered Tory Burch, or Chylak of course it‘s not a Chanel, but they have some nice pieces every now and then at an acceptable price. Sadly, fashion industry has gone nuts. 🙁
The Row’s prices have gone up considerably too…..
…is it terrible to say the workmanship of The Row bags doesn’t justify the price? The one bag I have, while gorgeous, hasn’t handled regular use with the sturdiness you’d expect at that price point.
This is a SICKNESSSS!!! Of the highest order.
I bought my Chanel Jumbo Classic Flap Lambskin from NM for $3,600. At that time, I thought it was outrageous since I had never spent that much money for a bag, ever! Also, the boutique allowed me to pay it off in 6 months. Since that time, the price has increased $8,100.00! Today, I would definitely not spend the current price of $11,700.
