It takes a truly special cause to get brands as exclusive as Celine and Prada to abandon their normally sky-high pricing structures, but with Born Free, they’ve done just that. Born Free is a charity …
Very few people will ever own a one-of-a-kind bag from their favorite designer. Under normal circumstances, you’d have to be a longtime client of the company with a history of lavish purchases to even have the chance of being given such an opportunity, and even then, one-off creations are usually rare and reserved for the Daphne Guinnesses of the world.
What if all of the proceeds from that bag were then to go to charity? Almost unheard of. But that’s exactly the opportunity that Moda Operandi’s Lauren Santo Domingo and the BeLive Wayuu Mochila Project have teamed up to do – Santo Domingo tapped eleven designers from Valentino to Maison Martin Margiela to design traditional woven mochila bags to benefit over 30 Colombian charity organizations. If there’s one thing on which we can all agree around here, it’s that fake bags are the opposite of awesome. Both eBay and the Council of Fashion Designers of America are on board that ship as well, and they’ve gotten together to start the “You Can’t Fake Fashion” tote bag campaign, which launches at 11 a.m. today on the eBay Fashion Vault.
To mark the launch of the $35 anti-fake tote bags, whose proceeds benefit the CFDA Foundation, eBay and the CFDA asked 50 American brands and designers to customize one-of-a-kind totes that will retail for $150 each. From a minimal, modernist version by The Row to appliqued black lace from Jason Wu to illustrations by Rodarte, the designers came through. Some of the designs are better than others, of course, but we’ve got pictures of all of them after the jump. Which one is your favorite? If you’d like to purchase one of the regular or customized totes to support eBay’s and the CFDA’s fight against fakes, visit the eBay Fashion Vault at 11 a.m. today. (more…)
EBay: It has everything! That nail polish that you should have bought two years ago but didn’t, the pillow shams that match your duvet cover for half the retail price, an unlocked iPhone 4 that you shouldn’t bid on because it’s a scam, it’s all there. And now, it has the Hermes Birkin. That’s right – not an Hermes Birkin, THE Hermes Birkin. Owned by Jane Birkin herself, who famously inspired the bag on a flight in 1984. Birkin is auctioning her iconic bag to support relief efforts in Japan. But because Birkin is so very French and bohemian and eccentric, this bag is not without a few modifications. (more…)
Over dinner a couple of weekends ago, a friend asked me if it ever felt silly to write about fashion in the wake of human and environmental disasters like the recent earthquake and tsunami in …
It’s not every day that I wake up and find photos of bags like the Lulu Guinness Fan Clutches waiting to greet me in my inbox, but every now and then, I get lucky and beautiful bags just appear. Yesterday was one of those days, and to make the whole thing even better, these clutches are here for a good cause.
Lulu Guinness partnered with British visual artist Rob Ryan to create the one-off collaboration that you see above. The clutch, which is signed by both Guinness and Ryan, is currently being auctioned off via eBay to benefit African AIDS charity ASAP. If it’s not your style, Guinness has also released two other handmade fan clutches in very limited editions, inspired by former model Sophie Dahl and singer Paloma Faith. Pictures of those are after the jump. (more…)
Who doesn’t love the opportunity to buy a new handbag and simultaneously contribute much-needed money to a good cause, all for the price of one? Particularly when the handbag is one you’d want to buy anyway? Botkier is a brand that has successfully linked fashion and charity in the past, and they’re doing it again with their Botkier Joy Satchel.
Designed in collaboration with the bag’s namesake, actress Joy Bryant, 50% of the proceeds from every bag’s sale will go to Oxfam, an international charity organization that aids the poor, particularly in developing nations. With such a noble cause tied to such a nice bag, there may be literally no downside. (more…)
Back in June, we found out that Jimmy Choo was going to be releasing a line this fall in conjunction with Elton John’s AIDS charity, and now the first vestiges of that limited edition line are making their way to market for pre-order. Everything from flip-flops to clutches will be available, but the centerpiece of the effort is the Jimmy Choo Project PEP Glazed Canvas Tote. (more…)
