When megastars, editors, fashion’s biggest It-girls, and supermodels alike take notice of a particular handbag, it becomes impossible to ignore that it’s destined for success.
That’s exactly what happened in 2013, when Saint Laurent’s then–Creative Director, Hedi Slimane, introduced the Sac de Jour.
Arguably one of Saint Laurent’s most successful bag releases to date, the Sac de Jour—with its top handles, structured rectangular shape, and signature leather padlock—remains part of the brand’s lineup today, more than a decade after Slimane’s departure.
Why the Sac de Jour Still Works Today
The Sac de Jour is undeniably timeless. It transitions seamlessly from day to night, work to weekend, and beyond. It’s a seasonless choice that shines in any size or color, and one that can be worn by anyone, regardless of age or gender.
Upon its release, the SDJ was highly sought after by handbag-loving celebrities, appearing on their arms day after day. Now, more than a decade later, the beloved bag has been carried by countless stars and remains an integral part of Saint Laurent’s lineup.
Modern Updates, Same Iconic Shape
Under the direction of Anthony Vaccarello, the design has seen subtle updates, including on-trend suede versions, quieter closures, and other modern iterations. Saint Laurent clearly struck gold with the SDJ. While it has already secured a lasting place in the handbag world, the question remains: is it truly a classic?

As the SDJ approaches a decade and a half in the spotlight, I’d argue the answer is yes. While the idea of a “classic” in fashion can be subjective, the Sac de Jour fits the bill.
Its silhouette has a timeless appeal that will remain both relevant and coveted for years to come. It has already stood the test of time, remaining a cornerstone of Saint Laurent’s lineup.
In my opinion, the Sac de Jour is here to stay for another decade—and if the handbag gods allow, maybe even longer. What do you think?

I think of it as a more accessible version of a Birkin.
Plus it has the benefit of a shoulder strap!
I have had my SDJ for 4 years now and it has held up incredibly. I can’t imagine the structured tote looking “dated”. It is a great work bag if you don’t need to carry a laptop for work. I will definitely have mine for years to come!
I love the Sac du Jour, I have the small and the size is perfect and the quality is amazing. Year after year this bag has a solid place in my rotation. It’s a classic for sure.
My medium Sac de Jour in black croc is 10 years old and looks like new.
Incredibly versatile and can dress up anything.
Yes I believe so. It is timeless in shape, and has certainly braved the years with consistent popularity.
It’s a basic square tote that gives Zara vibes…
I’ve had mine for about 6 years, it’s aged beautifully, always gets the comments, but sadly it’s becoming too heavy for me, so I choose smaller bags.
I think so. I was actually out trying them today, but I will probably go the secondhand route.
Hmmmm no.
It’s so close to what I’m looking for, but not enough about it I like… So it leaves me flustered 😀
Looks classy but price is not so affordable though.
