Introducing the Chanel Gabrielle Bag

Chanel doesn’t often put the full weight of its corporate machine behind the launch of a new bag line, so when the brand devotes its attention to one of its new accessories, we follow its lead. The last time this happened, it was for the Chanel Boy Bag, which spawned an industry-wide trend for chain-strap flap bags and plenty of imitators. Now, the Chanel Gabrielle Bag is up next for Spring 2017.

It’s actually a bit of a misnomer to refer to the Gabrielle as just a bag, because the brand launched it as a full line. The primary style is an unassuming, medium-size hobo (there are also smaller and larger versions in the same structure), but the full run also includes a shopping tote, a backpack, and a drawstring bag that Chanel is simply calling a purse. Common among the bags is a sturdy base that provides structure to the softer leather upper.

Aesthetically, the bags are pretty subtle and functional. This type of shoulder bag structure is not one heavily associated with Chanel, so in spite of the quilted leather and chain-accented strap, the Gabrielle is a more subtle reflection of the brand’s aesthetic than other Chanel signature bag lines.

The Gabrielle bags only come in a handful of neutrals in their first season, including white, beige, navy and black. The bags start at $3,200 for the small hobo, up to $4,200 for the purse in partial python. Check out all the available bags below.

The mixed metal hardware is very cool. But, IMO, there’s nothing refreshing or interesting about these bags, esp the shape. Maybe I’d like them better in a color. If Chanel wants to hype a bag line, I don’t get why it’s these.

I like the bag but not sure I have to have it. I have heard from others that the base has a tendency to scratch and that would be a concern that needs to be addressed. I will wait and see, maybe I would purchase in future.

Funny enough, I like the drawstring bags. They’re not functional in my life, but I like the look.

Love these. I prefer open top bags to flaps (flap bags awkward to open). Almost all Chanel leather goods are some kind of flap. Good to see bags with practical designs. When you’re spending so much on a handbag, it has to be useful.

I love the tote but I already know it will be too big and heavy for me to bring to work and too small for my tote-y needs.

Finally a Chanel that I can use everyday. I like the Hobo style. (I don’t think it looks like your standard “hobo” bag though – I appreciate the structure to it). And I agree with Sparky – zipper top bags are so much more functional.

Can’t say they take my breath away but then again when the boy was released it didn’t move off the shelves in the stores for a long time. The power of social media created a frenzy eventually. These definitely seem more practical than a flap. Love the chains though and I personally think the smaller cross body will become a blogger favourite.

I like the shopping tote, but for now the rest aren’t my thing. The hobos actually remind me of something you’d get at a kiosk at the mall.

I don’t think that there will bcomment image e just the Same Hype the Boy bag still has. Maybe the gabrielle purse and the backpack. But in my oppinon it has no Fine Chanel style nor character. The Boy could become an Icon bag – wild, young but also Lady like. the gabrielle certainly not. Without the cc sign it could be a bag from wall mart. Sorry ?
We will see what the celebs will show ?

I quite like the hobo, but it remind me of old school Coach duffle sac. Now, I wonder if the strap can unfold the chain to do the crossbody.
