For a moment, I thought about pairing this gallery of Chanel Spring 2015 runway bags with only the following text: “Below, you will find a series of photos of Chanel bags that you will not like. Don’t shoot the messenger.” Part of me still thinks that might suffice.
After several seasons of bright, engaging, thoroughly modern bags (on bags on bags) at its runway shows, Chanel scaled things back this season, theming some of its bags around the zeitgeist-y notion of feminist protest (a theme which was not treated with any sort of reverence) and others around a watercolor that Karl Lagerfeld painted. Still others looked as though they were fashioned around a jacket-like idea, perhaps out of irritation that Moschino is selling Chanel-themed jacket bags hand over fist without any benefit to the company.
If you’ve grown used to the enthusiastic, vibrant approach to accessories that Lagerfeld has taken in the recent past, you won’t find that here. Chanel’s runway included a few notable pieces, mostly clutches with splashy sayings, but the marquee bag, a heavily adorned messenger bag clearly created in the image of the brand’s beloved graffiti backpack, felt too genuinely DIY to command its no-doubt-luxurious price tag. And then there were bags that appeared to be speakers; why they were there or if Chanel will actually sell them is anyone’s guess. Check out all the bags below.
