As I get older, I find that, little by little, I get preppier. There is a very practical reason for this that the vast majority of you will easily relate to: Trends cycle in and out of fashion in 5 to 10 to 20 year increments, but certain wardrobe staples are truly timeless. Take belt bags, for example. They used to be called fanny packs, and are basically the opposite of timeless. It took them quite a while to bubble back up into mainstream fashion, but here they are at last! We’re suddenly being bombed with a bevy of 1990s trends, which makes me feel that it’s safe to start using descriptors like “fresh” again.
Related: I recently received an email newsletter from a major denim retailer that was simply titled: “Life after skinny jeans,” and my blood ran cold. Were skinny jeans already over? Had I somehow missed that?! Answer: No, skinny jeans are not dead yet, but you’ve probably noticed that twenty-somethings (and select trendsetters) have already switched to a sort of high-rise, shapeless, cropped leg mom jean that really flatters no one in particular, but will nonetheless stick around for another two to three years. There is a silver lining to all this 90s nostalgia though, friends: Paris Hilton now has carte blanche to dress like Paris Hilton once more!
