By now, it’s become abundantly clear that basket bags are not just a trend; they are a seasonal staple that has transcended the trend cycle, returning to ubiquity year after year as soon as the temperatures begin to climb.
The offerings grow bigger each season, and this year is no different. We’ve already welcomed a new cohort of beach-ready basket and raffia bags, but still, I keep coming back to the tried and true. With Memorial Day behind us, I’ve got my eye on two of the best basket bags the luxury handbag world has to offer.
I might not be hopping on a plane to Capri or the South of France, but I’ve decided that this is the season to add one of these seasonal staples to my wardrobe. Why shouldn’t I romanticize beach weekends on Long Island at my parents’ home or my upcoming staycation at a rooftop pool?
I’ve got my eyes on the Loewe Basket Bag and Celine’s Classic Panier, which are incredibly similar when you get down to the nitty-gritty. Let’s discuss!
Loewe Basket Bag
The Loewe Basket bag has become as synonymous with the House of Loewe as the Puzzle bag, and while it feels like it has been part of the brand’s line-up forever, it was actually first introduced in 2017. For me, it’s the one that started it all, putting both Loewe and this now-classic summer staple on my radar.
Loewe’s Basket bag tugs at my heartstrings because it perfectly encapsulates Loewe’s heritage. Crafted in Spain using raffia leaves that have been cultivated, harvested, sun-dried, and handwoven by Moroccan artisans. The bag is further defined by its leather Anagram patch.
Combining traditional elements of artisanal craft with Loewe’s modern allure, it has become an integral part of Jonathan Anderson’s Loewe. Retail is $690 for the medium size (10.4″ x 15.7″ x 6.3″).

Celine Classic Panier
The Celine Classic Panier is a bit newer to the scene. Introduced in the early 2020s, it is similar in construction to the Loewe Basket Bag, crafted from palm leaves and trimmed with leather. It arrives in new colors each season, but I am still thinking about this orange version from a couple of years ago!
Celine’s version combines the seasonal feel of a summer basket bag with the chic French allure of Celine and a hint of House history, as it’s finished with a bold Triomphe Logo. The retail price for the Teen Size (9″ x 8″ x 6″) is $740.

Right now, I’m leaning 50/50 as Celine and Loewe are two of my favorite brands! Which would you choose?
Imagine buying a $10 panier and paying $700 just to flash a giant logo!
Would people buy it if it does not have a logo?
There will always be logo-loving shoppers whose reason to buy designer items is to be seen by others.
Loewe because it has more character and I don’t like the Celine emblem.
I vote for neither of these. Loewve bags are great for their leather but there is no reason to buy this basket when you can get a beauty from Sezane.
I was just about to write the same thing!!
YES! Sezane baskets are stunning!
If you must buy one of these, I would say Loewe. I feel like Celine bags depreciate so fast, not worth it, IMO.
Neither.
I have two Celine panier bags (different shapes) and love them!
I own a few basket bags… I purchased the Loewe in brown, the Jacquemus in Ivory, and I have an Anthropology brand one. I’m looking to buy the French backpack basket version also. I’m just obsessed and will buy them with logos and without! I hate the Celine logo tho.
