We started Purse Blog in the beginning of 2005. Can you believe that? I had no idea what I was doing. One day Vlad set up and site and told me, “Ok, now you can write about bags”. I laugh and almost cringe at my first posts, they are totally different from where we are now. At the same time I love seeing where we came from to get to where we are. We started with 30 visitors a month and now have over 500,000 visitors a month.

Kim Cattrall: Name that Bag!

June 8th, 2009 / Posted in Name that Bag! by Megs Mahoney Dusil.

Kim Cattrall Bag

We haven’t asked you all to Name that Bag on PB in a long time. With the addition of Bag That Style to our team we have moved most celebrity posts over there. But that doesn’t mean we won’t have a celebrity post on PB anymore, they will pop up from time to time.

I find many bags we are asked to ID from time to time and some truly catch my attention. This supple and luscious woven leather bag Kim Cattrall was spotted carrying around has me going ga-ga. The woven leather is not Bottega Veneta, as they do not do a weave as thick as this bag has. I adore this bag. I want this bag. And now it is time for you to help us Name that Bag!

Stella McCartney Patent Rivet-Detail Clutch

Monday, sigh. It is always a little bit harder for me to get out of bed on Monday morning. I don’t know if I think hitting the snooze button a few extra times helps draw out the weekend just for a few minutes longer or what. No matter what, getting out of bed this morning was no exception. Are any of you feeling the same way today? Well, I hope to help jump start your day with two of my favorite things, handbags and voting on them!

Stella McCartney Patent Rivet Detail Clutch

The Stella McCartney Patent Rivet-Detail Clutch is a handbag worthy of a “Love it/Hate it” vote. I saw this clutch last week and couldn’t decide how I felt about it, so I thought about it a bit over the weekend. And guess what, I still don’t know if I would give it a thumbs up or thumbs down. This black patent fold-over clutch is adorned with gold-tone rivet detail. The size of the rivets varies a bit but don’t seem too big or too small. Open up the clutch and you’ll find two internal compartments. This is a feature I love. Although clutches are small, it helps to find what you may have put in the bag. For whatever reason there are times when I swear to you, I search longer for my keys in a clutch than in a large hobo. Ok, I digress. Help me out here, what do you think about this bag? Buy through Net-a-Porter for $725.

Is this bag a hit or a miss?

Rebecca Minkoff DC Sample Sale

I can guarantee you all of one thing: designers and corporate offices have continued to realize the pull that the online realm has. One such example is with Rebecca Minkoff, a designer that we have covered as she started her company through present day, where her bags are known upon first glance and celebrities can not put them down. I don’t doubt that she owes much of her success to the online realm and her fans who have gathered to talk about her bags. The Rebecca Minkoff subforum on Purse Forum leads the web in the number one place to chat about all bags from this designer. And after the success of her other sample sales, the group of gals asked for another sample sale. And Rebecca Minkoff complied.

Tomorrow is the Rebecca Minkoff Sample Sale in Washington, DC. If you are in the area, you must check it out tomorrow!

LeSportsac Leigh Bag – Silver

LeSportsac Leigh Bag

LeSportsac’s durable fabrics, whimsical prints and modern palettes are always a great combination. The LeSportsac Leigh bag in silver is no exception. The oversized profile and lightweight ripstop fabric make this tote the perfect tote for carrying all of your summer vacation essentials. The interior is made of 100% nylon. That is it won’t be ruined if you accidentally forget about your wet bathing suit from last weekend. The rolled handles and wide shoulder strap make climbing up the hundredth step to your hotel in Cinque Terre a breeze. We also love the metallic silver color which makes us feel like a real jetsetter.

Michael Teperson Feathered Flute Bag

Michael Teperson Feathered Flute BagSo, I’m not really posting this to review the Michael Teperson Feathered Flute Bag – I think you’d really have to see it in person to give it a fair shake, since it’s so odd (I mean…rooster feathers?). I’m posting because sometimes, us handbag people associate certain bags (or types of bags) with certain things or events. At least I do. So when I was paging through Vivre today, I came across this bag and immediately thought of Sex and the City. Circa season 5 (well, maybe 6), while Carrie is dating Burger (well, about to be sticky-noted by him) and they’re going to go to Smith’s play in Brooklyn.

He wants to go on his motorcycle, because he’s an insecure dude trying to be masculine, and she’s in her new Prada dress and has her hair fixed and DOESN’T want to go on the motorcycle. To make the idea that much more ridiculous, the wardrobe department gave here a clutch with several feet of, uh, stuff hanging from it. I think it was beading in that particular case. At any rate, this bag is that type of bag – the one you carry when you’re wearing shoes so high you can’t really walk in them and you expect to be doing nothing but sitting and being awesome for the entire night. And for that, I think it is fabulous. Buy through Vivre for $950.

Jimmy Choo Sky Shoulder Bag

Jimmy Choo Sky Bag I’m using a kind of stock photo that we normally don’t choose for our posts here at PurseBlog in order to demonstrate the Jimmy Choo Sky Shoulder Bag for a few reasons. First, all of the traditional straight-on stock photos I could find have the bag overstuffed to the point of looking like a giant fringe-y rectangle hobo, and that’s not a good look. I try not to criticize a bag based on shortcomings that don’t actually exist, and when I took my first look at the regular shots of this bag, something told me that that’s not what the bag would be like if I actually saw it in the wild.

Jimmy Choo Sky Leather BagSo when I started scrolling through all the detail shots, I got to the one of the mannequin wearing a slightly-less-stuffed version of the bag and it confirmed my first suspicion – this is actually pretty cool purse. The leather looks magnificent and the rows of short fringe don’t come off as overpowering or gimmicky. I think it was a great move to make the gusset out of regular flat leather instead of covering it with fringe, and the overall effect is that of an excellent everyday bag for fall and winter with a ton of personality. Which brings me to my second reason for making this post – it’s an important reminder to never trust stock photos to be gospel truth. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $2295.

Botkier Venice Satchel

June 5th, 2009 / Posted in Botkier Handbags by Megs Mahoney Dusil.

Botkier Venice Satchel

Hobo or Satchel: Which style do you prefer? That ultimately depends on how you like to wear your handbags. Many of you loved the Botkier Venice Hobo, as did the entire PurseBlog team, and now we will bring you information on the fraternal sister of the the bag. The Botkier Venice Satchel’s design contains every aspect of the hobo that we found so edgy and cool: the exposed zips, tassels and smooshy leather. The satchel comes with an optional shoulder strap. I am more of a hobo girl, give me my bag and let me sling it over my shoulder, but I have a soft spot for satchels with shoulder straps. Still throwing it over my shoulder and still loving the look. The colors of Botkier bag I love most and this satchel is available in caramel or sunshine yellow. Now I ask you; hobo or satchel in the Botkier Venice bag? Buy through Nordstrom for $595.
