To Denim or Not to Denim? The Return of a Cult Favorite

Denim is a trend that has outlasted the rest, but why is it so hard to pull the trigger on?

When does a trend earn its place as a true wardrobe staple?

It’s a question we come back to often, and right now, denim is making a compelling case—specifically, denim handbags. Once considered a seasonal novelty that came and went with the trend cycle, denim bags have taken on a more permanent role in recent years, feeling less like a fleeting moment and more like an enduring essential.

Denim Bags: Trend or Timeless Staple?

Much of denim’s resurgence in the handbag space can be traced back to fashion’s ongoing fascination with Y2K nostalgia. The early 2000s embraced denim in all its forms, and today’s revival feels both familiar and refreshed.

From Louis Vuitton’s Monogram denim to Coach’s repurposed denim and Gucci’s instantly recognizable double Gs, denim bags reliably reappear each spring and summer, but now with a sense of consistency that has transcended the trend cycle.

The Case for Denim as a Modern Staple

Fashion’s cyclical nature ensures that what once felt dated will inevitably feel new again. Still, denim stands apart. Despite its reputation as a novelty material, it has proven its staying power time and time again.

Much like a perfectly worn-in pair of jeans, a denim bag offers both versatility and ease of wear—making a strong argument for its place as a modern-day staple.

Despite denim cementing its place in modern handbag history, I’ve yet to fully commit to the denim bag moment—and I’m not entirely sure what’s holding me back. Chanel’s 25 bag in washed denim is certainly tempting, and the return of Louis Vuitton’s iconic Monogram Denim this season has me reconsidering.

So tell us—are you carrying denim this season? Let’s discuss.

They look and feel so… cheap.

I bought the Chanel 25 in medium wash denim. It’s beautiful.
I also own a vintage baguette in dark blue denim with beading, a Tom Ford era Gucci shoulder baguette in black denim, A Chanel Patchwork flap in blue denim and a Bottega Mini Wallace in leather and Denim Intrecciato. I have loved denim bags for decades.

I really want a denim bag for the summer, but I am leery. The last one I bought left color transfer on my shirt. Maybe it’s gotten better.

Love me a denim bag!

I got a Chanel denim sweethart flap from 23P.
I use it every spring and summer since I got it and I love using it! No regrets here. The new one from LV looks nice too!

Love a denim bag! I have a damier speedy from a Pharrell men’s collection and a denim telfar tote. Something about them is appealing and versatile
