Saddle Bags Are Seriously Underrated

Why does this classically stylish shape seem to fly under-the-radar?

Saddle Bags

Originally, saddle bags were used by horseback riders to store belongings on long rides, allowing a user to be unbothered by another type of carryall. In fact, the traditional version of the saddle bag wasn’t even worn by the user itself, rather it was draped behind the saddle of a horse, affixed with buckle closures so that a rider’s belongings would stay in place. Typically, saddle bags were finished with a flap closure for maximum functionality because a rider could easily get in and out of the bag itself without having to remove it from their horse.

Today, saddle bags have taken on an entirely new meaning in fashion, though there are some details and aspects that have carried over into the modern versions of this classic silhouette. Saddle bags are almost always finished with a flap closure and occasionally they’re completed with a more secure buckle or snap too. However, the most notable and comparable feature of the saddle bags of today is the crossbody wear, which like the original, allows its wearer to go completely hands free.

And yet, despite its sleek shape, historical background and ease of wear, the saddle is a shape that sometimes flies under-the-radar, gaining in popularity some years while fading to the background others. However, for fall 2020, the saddle is once again taking center stage and rightfully so. Stylish in its own right and nearly perfect for everyday wear, this silhouette is one that shouldn’t be ignored. Below we’ve rounded up some of our favorite for fall. I really like the Celine, especially the color. And the Rockstud Saddle bag is one version of the Rockstud I actually like. Great article!

Of course, the Marcie is great. 🙂 Surprised by how much I like the Prada, too! Awesome post about an under-celebrated style.

Great selection of bags. Definitely an effortless style.

I’ve been in love with the Dior Bobby since it was introduced; however, I can’t justify the price since, with tax, it’s close to 4K!

rashmi

exactly my point!! that Bobby bag should have been around $2700-$2900! No amount of pics with influencers carrying the bag will influence me to buy this outrageously priced bag! What the heck are these big designers thinking? They should be reducing the prices not increasing!!

I miss the Loewe Gate bag….
