If there’s one word to describe the ebbs and flows of fashion, it would be this: fickle. Some trends stick around for seasons or even years. When we think of trends, we often think of ubiquity, something that is everywhere and that’s popularity is impossible to ignore, with the power to define decades or specific periods of time.

Then, there are those trends that come and go faster than you can swipe your credit card. And sometimes there are those that seem to defy the odds, transcending beyond the trend stage and becoming full-on wardrobe staples. By definition, fashion trends are popular for a period of time, reaching a high point or peak before eventually declining in popularity. However, micro-trends are in a league of their own.

How Does a Microtrend Relate to the Trend Cycle?

Micro-trends are as fickle as trends come. They can be massive, but they can also be more niche, but experts say that what defines one is how fast it comes and goes. As opposed to macro-trends that follow the traditional trend cycle and trickle-down theory, micro-trends reach the fast fashion market as quickly as the luxury one. Social media has only continued to fuel the fast-paced development of these micro-trends.

Heavy Metals

One major micro-trend that has been spotted this spring has been heavy metal accents on handbags and other accessories, particularly grommets. These details are anything but classic, packing a punch in style and seriously upping any handbag’s cool factor. Reminiscent of the early 2010s when punk accents à la Alexander McQueen and Saint Laurent were all the rage, the trend has been spotted popping up left and right since spring 2023’s new arrivals began dropping, and we’re here for it.

No need to hit up Hot Topic if this style is calling your name. We found a handful of bags that hit just right, with a few vintage options, too, because you know what they say; what’s old is always new again!

I love studded bags for the rock n roll vibe…but not this. I find this weird and depressing.

This reminds me of the 90’s so bad – love the Gucci but I’d only buy a cheap Zara bag in this trend because it will date so bad.
